Get a lab' for your first dog and you wont go far wrong...

thing with labs is my partners mates got a black lab as a pet and its boisterous as f**k and its put her right off them especially as we have a youngen on the way.

thanks all the same

I'll take a guess and say its not a worker and probably another 1 of these fat 1's that thinks it rules the roost....? :hmm: Its all in the upbringing mate, let the dog know who is the boss. You get out what you put in i'm afraid.

You're timing is all wrong to have a pup, even a well bred lab pup. Everything will under strain with a new baby and the pup will be the one to suffer the consequences. Wait till the baby has come and everything has settled down or go for an older lab that maybe has been part trained. It will cost more money and you will have to do a lot of research to make sure the dog is OK but it will be calmer and you will learn a lot from it which will help you with your next dog.

that a spot on description of the mutt mate lol. i like the chocolate labs, i will have to have a talk with her and see if i can bring her around, what are they like as pups, i mean like do they need loads off attention

I agree with potshot a bit but on the other hand it is completely up to you decide to go for a pup or not, how serious you are about the lifestyle of dog work. Get the dog in the kennel and there will be no problems with your new baby, in some cases it would be nice for them both to grow up together...

What type of shooting you thinkin of doing.. look into HPR's as well. Brittany's are good. Would avoid weimeraners as a first dog. I have Large Munsterlanders...some say not the easiest of dog but they good with people, other dogs, biddable, easy to train and very very into humans but also a thinking dog. Good for rough shooting. This is my youngster, he is 19mth old. I also have another 2 and they work well with my lurchers when they out for their daily 'walk'. They have the energy level of a spaniel without the hyperactivity ;)

The dog to get all depends on what type of shooting you want to do. If you want to do rough shooting then a spaniel, if you just need a dog to retrieve then a lab. Also get the breed you like the most and you will enjoy spending time with. No point getting a lab or a spaniel if you only want to be out with a different breed.

Here in Malta we would get either a pharaoh hound or a maltese gundog (that are still applying to be accepted as a breed) They are both very good with children since here in Malta it was tradition that the children feed the dogs and the adults take care of the other farm animals. They are also very hardy with practically no genetic diseases. I would go for pharaoh hound for rabbits and maltese gundog for flushing out birds. Pharaoh hounds are prone to frostbite. Don't let the chubby look of the Maltese gundog deceive you since it has lots of stamina especially in intense heat.

attached a newspaper article about the maltese gundog:

The people involved will cooperate since they seem that they want the maltese breed to go international hehe.
