HITCH HIKING FOR 1ST TIME

Recommended Posts

I have always wanted to travell around britain , and without transport or alot of money its obviously hard to do so.Though i began to wonder if i could hitchhike ,offcourse anyone can but would i darest to do it alone knowing the obvious dangers one is putting themself in when getting in a strangers vehicle.Well summer this year i did just the thing ,i had actually promised to go see my cousin one weekend so purchased my ticket from Nottingham train station to Swindon ,cut a long story abit shorter i missed the train and couldnt use the ticket on any later train. It was either hitch hike or go home , well i decided to do the latter obviously feeling adventerus that afternoon a bus journey later and i was trying to thumb my first lift around half 12 ish .

Too my surprise it wasnt long before a blue van pulled up further along the layby ,well what a start i thought and after a good old chat with the driver he could only take me as far as junction 24 , i needed to go m1 south bound but was told i was waiting on the wrong exit , im sure i wasnt but hey ho deciding against my own thoughts and go with the more experianced lorry drivers. So instead i waited on the exit for the A50 where i was picked up by a guy in a suit and tie ,driving a brand spanking new saab convertable and with it being summer had the roof down .He again could only drop me as far as the M6 which was cool because i wanted to be heading south west .With no map available i was pointed in the right direction for a lift and again was thumbing for my third free taxi.

Ten or fifteen mins went bye before again someone else pulled over ,a young polish fella .. he spoke about how many people hitch hike in poland compared to the uk and though i aint been to poland i know not one other person personally thats done it before me.Down the M6 we went to wallsall and again he said bye and wished me luck with getting where i needed to be .Now wallsall was the worst place for a pick up point due to the road workings ,i could write a whole story on it alone .After half hours trying i decided to feed my body with a kfc , it did soon start to dawn on me if i would actually hitch another lift .I tried to suss away of getting that lift so instead of just thumbing i decided to pitch people as they came to a stop at the traffic lights.Wow what was i doing i thought and felt abit of a plum i must say but it worked thankfully and i was soon chatting away to yet another kind lad who offered to take me to the next juction which was 9 so i could get a better chance of a next lift.

This guy was abit of a geezer ,really flash car and jewellery and thanks to him i grabbed another lift from a skiplorry driver who took me down the m5 where i had to then get hitching for yet again another vehicle .Same again i pitched people as they stopped at the junction and after countlesss refusals a young woman with three children helped me get further .She too could only help so far and recond i be best trying on the exit of a service station which she wasnt wrong about , now the 7th lift was a young couple (apperantly fashion designers ) just been to buy a shop , well i looked interested and they drove which suited me fine .

I had been travelling for just under four hours at a guess and though tired already i kept myself going by the fact how proud of myself i was and not yet been murded .. it wasnt the last lift and was thumbing yet again fast moving vehicles trying to get them to stop ..one did but wasnt going far enough so i decided to wait longer , 20mins only flew bye and i had now started to catch a nice tan lol but help wasnt far away .An old landy with Mr farmer taking his pigs to slaughter , well we talked rabbiting ,farming and everything else to do with it and he dropped me at juction 19 on the m4 .

I knew i hadnt far to go so said my thankyou's and tried signalling drivers down once again ,i first was positioned wrong as the traffic was moving to quick so back down to the lights i went asking drivers for a lift .Walking back and forth in amongst the cars and traffic even knocking on windows and waving my hands to get peoples attentions i finally succeeded ..the last lift dropped me outside my cousins home around half 7.What a awsome experiance and now i plan on doing the same but only somewhere different next year .. thanks for reading.

Any other hitch hiking experiances people?

good hunting

I once hitched home to the Midlands from Somerset and the first person I stopped actually went within 5 miles of my house which was unbelieveable - I got home quicker than I ever had done before! I never had a problem hitching, I met some interesting folks, and I also have picked up a fair few myself too

One tip - I used to deliberately trap the seatbelt in the door as I shut it getting in, that way I learned how to open it up again if I needed to get out again sharpish ;)

Oh and I once picked up a couple going home from Glastonbury - not a good idea after a week or more without a shower ...

Had to do it last month with the bad snow, was walking along the moterway trying to get home road was just a sheet of ice, a guy in a tow truck put down his window n told me i had to jump in as he was moving as stopping he might have got stuck. Instead of going round the back I ran around the front n fell on me arse lol nearly right under the wheel.
