Update on the rubbish Airedale crosses LOL

Schuck and Lena, now 5 months. Finally managed to get the OH to take some training pics for a future project. Here's a few of the pups. Very different in character. Schuck, the black one, is much more Airedaly in temperament, very biddable, very intelligent and spends most of her time nose to the ground in the hedges. Lena is still a bit of an airhead, more Saluki-ish, likes to play and deaf me out a bit, but will listen if I mean business. I had to be quite firm with Schuck early on but now a whisper is enough to get her to obey. Lena has to be more delicately handled and is definitely harder to train, though just as bright in her own way.

 

I don't normally take them out together, and never off the lead together if I do: that way things stay nice and sensible and the ground's too hard for mad games together at the moment anyway.

They are pretty obedient on the whole, but Schuck really likes to please and we've bonded very well..

They're lovely looking things Penny ... not at all what I imagined the cross would look like Was there a lot of variety of coat/colouring amongst the litter?

The two of them are lovely Penny and by the looks of them sitting together are real lumps already, The dark one does look Airedaly in the face/expression in the one shes running looking straight in to the camra and the sandy one looks quite houndy considering she's half airedale,

 

 

Be nice too see them when there fully growen and when there fully matured keep us posted.......

Lovely looking pups, How do you think they will compare to other terrier crosses,as in prey drive and gameness.

Schuck is 23" and Lena is about half and inch shorter, but she is lighter in weight. Schuck is a heavy thing and must go 20kilos at least!

All the pups are different colours: 1 black with brindle points,1 black and cream points, 1 all pale red, Lena who is red but going black along her back, and a grizzle dog (red/brown shading.) The only one who might go broken coated is the black/cream one in Ireland: she has a bit of a beard now and her coat was very slightly wavy as a tiny pup, though she is still smooth at the moment. I think the fact that they are all smooth is partly due to the Redline Airedale coat: Dill isn't woolly, but harsh coated and she has a half brother who is slick (the Airedale term for smooth) almost like a Greyhound coat but much harsher to the touch. Also, from what I've seen in predominantly Saluki lurchers, that smooth gene is very dominant, more so than if these pups were a straight Airedale/Greyhound cross. Just my thoughts.

Ask me in another 7-8 months'time! If I had wanted to breed deliberately for gameness as in biting quarry, I would have used straight Greyhound over the Airedale as some Salukis aren't too keen on that sort of thing. I've never used the sire deliberately on biting quarry so he's never seen one single handed, only with other dogs if something has got up by accident; he seems to quite enjoy himself though LOL

 

Prey drive, as in desire to hunt and catch: I'm sure these pups will have loads, just not sure if it will encompass the whole spectrum of wildlife we have in the UK. Time will tell.

had the pleasure to see aredales on coyotes and aredale staghound crosses in roswell big strong dogs took coyote hogs deer and coons good varmit dogs and tough constitution ,like the asredale and the german rough haire dpionter as a non running dog breed good sporting dogs if trained well [bANNED TEXT] pups look handy time will tell
