Lung shooting bunnies.

Recommended Posts

The lung area on a rabbit isnt that much bigger than the head shot. You might need to practice until you are good with the gun. At night, on the lamp, the rabbits always look alot further away than what they are. For most of the time you will be 20 yards or less, so try and get good groupings at that range.

Over the years i have killed alot of rabbits with body shots, but if they are near cover then forget it. Even when drilled through both lungs a rabbit can cover 30 yards. Also i have shot a wide variety of springers off rests, both vehicles, fence, wall and sticks and the accuracy seems good enough to kill. Alot of shooting is down to confidence. If youre not confident then practice until you are before going for live quarry.

My two cent's worth!

When takinging a lung shot, very often you will destroy both the heart and both lungs

I will now only take heart/lung shots on kits as they tend to brop quicker than a headshot, believe it or not! Brain shots are fine on adults down to half grown  ut 9 times out of 10 a brain shot kit will be flapping around on the deck refusing to stop (even though it's brain dead)

Not only will a heart/lung shot work well, the chest will aslo (especially if the ribs or other bones are hit) absorb more of the kinetic energy of the pellet and this will produce as much "Nervous system, shock" (if not more) thna the brain shot; granted, the bunny may make it a few feet, but it's gonna die VERY quickly indeed

So there is nothing to stop you going for heart/lung shots at all

The thing with a brain shot, is if you miss, then you are either likely to miss completely or hit it elsewhere in the head/neck  and this will cause as much shock to the central nervous system as a heart/lung shot.!

A brain shot is "Technically" smaller than a heart/lung shot (but the size of the 'head' is as great as the chest cavity).

If you are capable of a fatal chest shot, then there is no reason why you should not implement it's use!

To answer the OP's post....

If you can't be sure of shooting well enough from a standing position, either practice until you can or don't take the shot.

You can kill a bunny with a heart/lung shot but unless you know exactly where to aim, it's no more easy a shot than a head shot....

Me and steve bagged six between us last nite / this morning, not a single chest shot, (an accidental neck shot) but no chest shots, nothing against chest shots but I just prefer head shots, if a head shot don't present itself I wil make a little noise so it does.

With a sub 12, if your are close enough to think you have the power for a heart/lung shot, why not aim for the head. I am inexperianced compared with most on here so don't kno if I am right in thinking chest shots would be better at closer ranges taking posible shoulders and ribs into consideration.

Unless as phantom says you are doing it for the cleaner kill in some situations.

Also I eat my rabbits so prefer any holes to be in the head if possible.

This thread is all about opinions and personal preferance, intresting to see what different people have to say :).

Thats my say.

.cheers lads. .ste.

A 12 ft.lb air rifle will kill a rabbit with a chest shot at short range, but not further than about 15 or 20 yards. There is too much bone to guarantee a clean kill, the chances are that you'll shatter the shoulder, but not kill it outright and it will die in considerable pain. Head shots are the only realistic way forward (neck and spine shots can be effective, but tend to do a lot of meat damage, and need to be MORE accurate than a headshot!)

If you're not confident of hitting the kill zone, then I'd recommend not shooting live quarry at all until you've had more practice.

Other option is to use a set of shooting sticks, bipod or tripod.

Well said spot on.

from start to finish...

zero the scope...have you got the bottle to one hole group? yup the bottle to let yourslf shoot, other wise known as confidence, later added is the word skill...du dahhh.

if you can hit a pellet hole on paper..card, tin can whatever....how far is a wall nut to be the same size as a 20 yard pellet hole? hmmmm you can hit it yu know, with practice like, the practice beleive it or not is so your head gets over the doubts .....and you dont pull off target physicaly with nerves or mentaly limit your selves..

now then, a heart shot is like hitting a pea, a head shot like a walnut size....so tecnicaly the ehad shots a doddle, so whered the dificulty come from? taboo andold wives tails??...hmmmmm

so the 'lung shot', if you mean a heart shot thirty yards is getting far in .177...god knows for a .22 but my 3 month anoyance at the slug slow caliber lead me straight to head shots bar woodies at sub 30's...

the atual just 'lung it' you'll be searching the bush's near too for a bit, but wait 5 let it bleed a bit first or the freight will make them run agaain untill they pump the blood out filling the lungs...may eem cruel, but hyping them up make sthem find some more fight 9 times out of ten, letting them 'expire' is quicker and less suffering....but, only when you know if theyre dead sort of thing, if its just a wing, then gues what....speedy gon zarless, you gottyu a chaise on.........

proper heart shots dun nicely are a case of it went thwup very quietly, it gently rolled over on its side and 'it went out' quite peasably...

another truth is statisticaly you will find a bunny without a brain, for real....hell of a clatter noise and ever harder to finish off by hand...had three in a load of years lol but had them non the less. (strangest was a two dicked bunny...lol straight up).

i have found in the past airgun mags adres those who dont know...and make them buy buy buy and buy another whilste bull shitting through theyre jacksies...today there a load better but.....just look at th epictures lol tisnt worth the self doubt.

all said and done, what can YOU do...........? so who are you kidding? yourself no less lol.
