breaking hounds to deer

There are places round where I hunt that have a lot of deer and they can be a nusense when we are hunting foxes. So I was wondering is it possible to stop dogs hunting them. I know it would be hard to do it to adult hounds but could you teach young pups not to hunt them the same as you can break them to sheep?

sheep are domesticated so you can socails dogs with them but deer are wild so soon as you get in a field with deer in it they will scent you are run so i would think it would be impossoable unless you know anyone with pet deer

Houndsmen here in the states use e-collars pretty regularly to break off deer and other trash. Is the use of e-collars and breaking scents an unusual practice where ya'll are?

Yes, it is quite easy.......

Get yourself an e.collar (I like Tri-Tronics myself)do some basic training so that the hound knows what is required of it, then set the hound up on a deer chase.

Give said hound a good shock and a scolding, do this as often as needed to break your hound.

I have as many deer in my area as anybody, lot's of Mule and a huge population of Whitetail as well as Moose and Elk.

I make sure all of my hounds are broke to all game except hare, otherwise I would be chasing hounds all over the country and never doing any hunting...........hope this helps.

Rocky-That is the #1 concern of anyone with foxhounds or big game hounds here in the States. USA holds the White tailed Deer like India is with the cow. If it wasnt so sad it be gay sorry to say[isnt that a song?} Anyway if your hunting over here with anyhound its got to be deer broke or "BENT" as we say. Get your self an E-collar and take young pups for walks and put them into the deer, correct them with the collar and repeat often. Also putting them on the proper quarry so as they know its ok to chase. Good luck and dont give up it dosnt happen over night.

Both, depends on the coyote. When we had 6 or more and the coyote was under 40lbs it was no problem.

Its not a problem over here as hounds are used to hunt deer. Though Ben Hardaway had a novel way to do it in his book you get a gentle slop a barrel and some deer scent in a spray bottle. You put the hound in the barrel and spray it with the deer scent while rolling the barrel down the slop. He recons it is granteed to cure 75% of hounds from chasing deer and 100% from ever getting back in a barrel again.

when i kept my hounds i had this problem till i was told to get a billy goat and house him next to the hounds it did work .i never realy had this problem again to be honest but the goat stank to fook .
