Checking up on the law

Recommended Posts

Funnily enough, I was in the supermarket yesterday and I saw Jackie (a local officer), she mentioned that she had not seen me walking around with my gun for a while, I said in reply, "No I've not seen you for a while either"

Comments: Hello,

I am wondering about the law and legislation of me (a 16 year old male) being able to walk with an air rifle, unloaded in a sling, with the pellets away from the rifle itself to my permission (written permission) which is approximately a mile away from my house, I have came across numerous articles about this same point, and nothing has made it clearer for myself this is the article in question; http://abaclays.ccc3...20LAW%20AIR.pdf

Please can you shed some light on the subject please!

Many Thanks in Advance

Gareth TREVOR Wilson

Well that policeman was right and to me it sounds like he was unsure his self or and quite likely he was a nice policeman and used his discretion to give you a few words of advice and send you on your way, either way you were lucky. That is a shame for you mate as you seem like a very sensible lad, on the plus side its a good excuse to get a lift to your permission, I realy hope that it dosent hinder your hunting mate.

Trev, good onya for trying to find out the real legal position. It's al so confusing, and you need to check that your information is up to date. The information you initially posted was out of date, and could have landed you in a load of trouble.

Rossi, the offence would have been under the firearms act(s) as amended by the violent crime reduction act 2006, so prior to 2006 it would not have been an offence.

my mates dad bought a HW 100, without the pump/divers bottle and had to go back to the gunsmiths for a refill. this gunsmiths is on a very busy road in a student area and its pay and display and private parking all over (even the guy who works there has to feed the parking meter all day while he works!) so he parked a 10 minute walk away in a free car park where he was pulled by a policeman who told him it was illegal to walk around with a rifle in public AND CONFISCATED IT!!!!!!!! so he rung up the police station to get it back and they confirmed the mis-informed jobsworth copper had no right whatsoever to take his rifle, and made him give it him back, no doubt feeling like a right twonk! the laws are only as good as the people who uphold them

funnily enough, i live on a council estate, rife with crime and idiots and i've only ever been stopped by the police once, who asked what was in my gunbag, i told them it was an air rifle and they drove off, no checks or anything.

my point was that it'll be hit and miss that you get pulled by a cop that actually knows his stuff. You got let off, and your 16. My mates dad's a grown man and they tried to throw the book at him. like i said, law's are only as effective as those who uphold them.

i was once going to my derbyshire permission.takes 2 busses and around 2 houers. got in to the middle of nottingham and the bus was stopped just short of town, apparently they had reports of an armed man and there were choppers cars dogs the works every where the place was swarming, thing was we had to get off the bus and walk through it all to get to the bus station for the next bus.

by this time the then missis was in bits crying shakeing convinced i was going to be jumped on any minuet by the armed responce, must admitt was exspecting it my self. dressed in normal clothes but with large cammo bag and my rifle on me.

just walked through as normal as can be but with the missis in the state she was in must have looked like i was makeing her come with me.

walked passed no end of coppers even ask one where to go to get round the corned off streets, and they never even battered an eyelid, could not belive it.

they have reports of and armed man, taped off half of nottingham must have been nearly all of nottinghams police out,and i walk through them all with a rifle on my back and a girl crying. if they had have stopped me i would have understood, and been as helpfull as poss, just seamed so wroung to me that they dident. this was all at the start of the year.

I suppose it would be different though if you got stopped compared to me, because i'm under-aged to "walk" with a gun, and presuming your older than 18 your legal :/

Makes you think what the country's coming too
