Risk it or stick to what you know

There are alot of keyboard hunters around these days and they are quick enough running down real hard working dogs, that prove day after day or night after night, but these sort of dogs are not getting the credit that they deserve.

Would you go for a blood line name that ''HAS'' been made out by the keyboard hunters that this dog from such and such blood line is the best, or would you be more than happy to take in another dog that has a real good local reputation or know of a real good working dog that hasnt come from ''talked about blood lines'' but really is 100% in the workin game?

I like to take some thing from no were and turn it in to some thing. When you put all the work in to a dog from nothing they normaly turn out the better ones.they tend to suit your needs but no one elses because theres no top name behind them.but beleave me ive had some un reconised dogs that would give some named dogs a run for there money

This is probably the moist sound piece of advice I have seen on these pages for a long time! Although I don't own true running dogs, I currently have x2 rescue dogs that are both little corkers. my alano x I had from 12 weeks old and everything he knows is what I have taught him, so if he turned out to be sh*t its on my shoulders.

The fact of the matter is, the dog doesn’t have to come from a working back round if he has the will and drive to please his handler, but for you running dog men a proven background is always a bonus, and if you have a line / cross / breed you like….if it aint broke don’t fix it!

Don’t be tempted in to getting something else with any form of doubt…this will show subconsciously in your training of the dog, and he might not turn out to be as good as he could have been.

Ask "bullmastiff" he had a rescue lurcher called Roo - he didn't know his history or parents etc but Bullmastiff gave him the time and attention he needed and what a dog he was! Although he was like a f*cking magician at getting out of very small windows at my farm! Wasn’t he Bully!

if i was to get a pup then atleast prover working parents and if i was to get a dog already working then aslong as its doing its job 100% is good enuf for me and as for recognised bloodlines, IMHO its a load of shit a name is a name and 99% of the time the original dog or dogs that started the bloodline name have been bred out over genarations of litters, as you say to many keyboard hunters ( bigging up ) names/breeds/types, IMO,

If I'm ever going to buy a new pup i go for X that will best suit my needs. An for what lines it comes of then as long as the sire and dam are proven.

Then i don't see the point in looking any further in to the line than that. So what if its great great grand parents done this and that. If the sire and dam couldn't then there no point breeding from them. But as the others say you only get out what you put in where ever the pup comes from.

As a pig hunter, in the old days, I think there's nothing like the wank factor of trying a different cross and seeing it produce the goods and then bragging about it to yer mates.

IU've kept tried and tested dogs in my pack but have always kept a new half cross or two as well, in the hope I will produce an outstanding start to a new breed.

I've had many average and poor half crosses but I've had a small handfull of damn good half crosses, including labrador/English bull terrier, boxer/pitbull, Doberman/pitbull, Aussie cattle dog/English bull terrier and fila braziliano/labrador.

Some of the average ones include Airedale/greyhound, German shorthaired pointer/pitbull, american bulldog/deerhound (surprisingly).

Some of the failures include bordercollie/pointer, airedale/great dane and english pointer/pitbull.

Why some failed and some succeeded is a question no one can answer, it's all in the dog.

By ferk, reading that back makes me realise how many dogs I've pigged with in the last 24 years or so.

had four lurchers in my hunting life to present day, ive had two good ones and one shite and one half decent the last two were from good breeders and repectable breeders but not made me happy i had all the expectations of been good working dogs as both parents were workers and blood lines wrote about in weekly magazines ,but the 1st 2 i had were local lads lurcher x lurcher ,but now around here lurcher to lurcher is now very uncommon so my next pup is from peoples experience ,breeding programmes and forum members who actually own such a dog

im going for the DEERHOUND X GREYHOUND

3 REASONS 1st want a dog capable of all quarry :whistling:

2nd good hybrid vigour/you know what ya getting 1st x wise

3rd ive not wed to bull x's for some reason cant tell you why just not keen on them :icon_eek:

i dont believe in names like has bin said people just breed for name not because the parents can do the job but cos its grandsire/dam was a good dog but as long as the parents did the job and you enter it right your half way there and i am one of those people who wil try new stuff out but thats just me
