Taking rifle into the USA

Hi all.. have any of you temporarily imported your gun into the USA? I know its possible, but would like to hear of any first hand experiences.

I've no experience here, which is why I've kept schtum so far. My impression is that it is bloody difficult. American Customs are dead leary about people bringing guns in. I have a standing invite to the States to do some shooting but my mate there says "Don't even think about bringing your own guns. By the time they clear customs it'll be time to go home. Then you have to get 'em out of bond."

 

Frankly, why bother? You can get a short ticket to shoot, say, a 'yote, a mountain sheep, and a lynx for $100. Hire the gun - a .243 will do the biz. Bring back some trophy skins!
