ear tattooing

or you can buy a kit and tatoo your own dogs ears. Theives do sometimes cut ears off etc but if you have your dog microchipped as well at least you have double the chance of being reunited with your dog. Put it this way, I would rather get my dog back minus its ears than not get it back at all.

The ear cutting off thing tends to happen most when people kill or dispose of unwanted ex racing greyhounds. They remove the ears to try and remove any traceability back to them as the owner/trainer etc

Ive read a few stories on here about people getting tattooed dogs back after theft, only to find they have had ears cut off or tattoo burned off with acid as you mentioned. In one case the acid went into dogs eyes and blinded it.

I'm sure these are relatively rare cases but worth bearing in mind.

it does happen with chips too, sadly. in some thin skinned breeds the chip can be felt between the shoulder blades and since its close to the skin surface it could be removed. were talking about evil people here who dont really care about dogs, the fact they can steal part of another persons family, an animal they have put a lot of time into, shows they just see a dog as being like an inanimate object, something to be stolen, traded, sold, or dumped if it doesnt suit their needs

if the thiefs want it bad enough they will get it, all you can do is make it as difficult as possible for them, tattoos are an added chance of getting your dog back same with chips mine have both, and if they ever invented a tracker the size of the chip i would have that aswell!! there not there to stop the dogs bieng taken thats your job, they are there to place your dog back with you if your lucky enough for it to fall in the right hands!!! i hate dog thieves the day i catch one near my dogs i'll tatoo his forehead so all of you will know what he is  !!
