Snare pegs ( hard ground )

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, what do yous pro snaremen use for pegs in the winter. Ive been trying to peg some with snares from trapworks and the pegs keep breaking. Would steal tent pegs be any good. Thanks.

Billy

I use 4mm wire 'staples' made from fencing wire about 6 inches long - they hold firm and go in ok in the hard ground - and they are free! ;)

similar thread going on in the ferreting section.

i was taught by an old family member what he called brick/stone snaring. we used old bricks/stones to hold the snares in place rather than pegs when the ground was very hard or frozen. i am sure there was a thread on hear recently that had good pictures! alawys remember that old charlie can pull much more weight than a bunny!

YEP ....... WIRE STAPLES , A GOOD ONE OF OLD SNAREMANS IDEAS ...

HOWEVER THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN THE GROUNDS FROZEN TO A GOOD 18 " DEEP ..... I FIND A FEW OTHER METHODS WORK A LITTLE BETTER ,

SOMETIMES I WILL USE THE GOOD OLD HOUSE BRICK METHOD .... IF THERES A SUPPLY NEAR , THOUGH MOST OF THE TIME I PREFER TO USE MY PEGGED SNARES WHICH ARE FITTED WITH SOME PEGS I MADE FROM STEEL BAR 8 INCHES LONG WITH A HOOP AT THE TOP I HAVE OVER 100 FITTED IN THIS MANNOR FOR HARD WEATHER , THESE ARE LEFT PROUD OF THE GROUND SO I CAN SLIP A HOOK UNDER TO PULL THEM OUT AS WHEN THE ICE HAS A HOLD THE BALER TWINE WILL SNAP BEFORE THE GROUND GIVES .........THOUGH I MUST ADMIT I TAILOR MY HARD WEATHER SNARING TO DIFFERENT GROUND OFTEN FENCE LINING

ALL THE BEST

to be honest we dont get that many frozen months in our country do we.ok ground is hard at time and more so the last few weeks, but dont see no need to carry bricks around with you.i use a pice of 15 mm re bar,8 inches lond and ground to a taperd point.easy to drive in and easy for snare pegs thereafter.im not a snare man in any way but it works for me.

Have not posted for a long time now, but there is a probing interest within the animal bloody rights group to out right ban the snaring of animals and I state within Wales though not as yet in England, how do we as a collective argue against this?
I can understand the argument that traps are more use than snares, but we have to invoke the use of snares when dealing with foxes in certain predicaments, or am I mistaken, please somebody tell me whether I am right or wrong, I do not want to look as though I am misguided but the latest snares do not kill but restrain the animal which is a good thing and is being responsible towards the animals well being!
We as a responsible trapping society have to abide by the rules so why are we as a responsible trapping society always covering our backsides.
Is it getting more difficult to apply our trade?.
Personally I do not use poisons so the cost of job does increase, though I do see a better job satisfaction.
At the end of the day its not all about money.
We as a collective can not allow our sheer existence to be erased like a rubber. please fight for our rights as it will not stop at snaring it will escalate towards the usual trapping and eventually shooting so if you care about our rights think first.
