happylamper 7 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Share Posted December 21, 2010 hi chaps my lad has a the old ford transit 97plate he's havin problems starting the dam thing in a morning just gone and bought a new battery put it on turned the engine over the engine was turning fast at first then started to run flat,so stuck tow rope on it pulled off started within seconds,big cloud of smoke but cleared after a short while so i turned the thing off,went to restart fired straight up without a turn on the engine did this a number of times before letting the battery die again.would be adviseable to put abit of petrol in the diesel tank.to try and make it fire up better?thanks Quote Link to post Share on other sites
jedandlevo 8 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Share Posted December 21, 2010 hi chaps my lad has a the old ford transit 97plate he's havin problems starting the dam thing in a morning just gone and bought a new battery put it on turned the engine over the engine was turning fast at first then started to run flat,so stuck tow rope on it pulled off started within seconds,big cloud of smoke but cleared after a short while so i turned the thing off,went to restart fired straight up without a turn on the engine did this a number of times before letting the battery die again.would be adviseable to put abit of petrol in the diesel tank.to try and make it fire up better?thanks if it wont start tow start it and when it running check the voltage / charge rate of the alternator with a multi meter it shud be between 13.6 volts ans 14.6 volts if its not then replace it . then check if theres fuel to the injectors straight away when cranking the engine if not it means the fuels running back to the tank or not flowing properly and would be advised to put a non return valve on the feed side to the pump but befor the filter and change the fuel filter and also check for leaks and tight fitting connections after that check the lift pump (passenger side near gear box) it shud be fushing fuel through at a fair rate crank the engine for ten seconds and catch the fuel that comes out in a pint bottle and it shud be at least half full if its ok the check the pump timing and DO NOT put petrol in the tank hope this helps atb jedandlevops if theres a lot of white smoke check that the butterfly on the air intake manifold os opening as it shud be and that the air filter isnt blocked or choked up Quote Link to post Share on other sites

happylamper 7 Posted December 21, 2010 Author Report Share Posted December 21, 2010 thanks for that mate,yes it is white smoke what puffs out when started takes a few seconds for the engine to pick up as if its choking to death, then clears i was thinking pump timing which i will check tomoz i need to lock the pump off?is that on the pully?done link pipes to injectors in summer got new fuel filter will replace tomorrow,lift pump next the gear box would the engine run sweet if faulty?but will check for the flow tomoz,thanks hl. tom.k 8 Posted December 21, 2010 Report Share Posted December 21, 2010 don,t worry about heater plugs mate it ant got none it,s a direct inection and dosent use them the the best thing is to check to see if the fuel is runnnig back buy changeing the lift pump it,s found on the side of the engine under neath the exhaust manifold if that does,nt cure it change the cold start valve on top of the engine near the injector pump and timeing cover as there prone for siezeing up incold weather thease are the cheapest things and the easyest to check first and most of the time cure it if not your injectorpump could be on the way out Quote Link to post Share on other sites
