DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
I've been feeding my 7 month old deerxgrey pup a mixture of dried food and raw beef mince, he loves the mince and is not to keen on the dried food. I bagged a couple of rabbits today with the ferrets cleaned the rabbits up and wondering how to go about it. Do you freeze them first for any reason? mince them? cut the meat off? or give them whole skinned and gutted? are they ok with the bones? Do you feed your lurcher or running dog rabbit as a main source of food? That dried food is 8 quid a 3kg bag!!

I paunch my rabbits and feed the whole carcass , skin fur and all. unless you freeze the rabs for 2 weeks at -18 degrees c then you will neeed to worm your dog more regularly
Blue one 89
Personally, i would skin them, after freezing them for 3 weeks. The skin can get stuck in the dogs gut and cause obstruction! I have heard of a few dogs coming to grief with rabbit skin getting stuck in the dog!! I freeze for 3 weeks, skin, then give whole, guts and all.. But, not all dogs eat the guts.
psm 43
i give mine rabits feet the fur cleans the intestine and drags out any worm infestation ie eggs- small -worms :thumbs:when passing through the dog Edited December 21, 2010 by psm

How did you find out about that little trick?

The whole thng is perfect for them once defrosted

About foxes, i have watched, a few foxes eat rabbit and they take most of the skin off, preferring the meat, they do eat some skin, but most of it is taken off.. Some dogs are fine with the skin and don't seem to come to any harm, but, a lot are not and i don't really want to play russian rulet with my dogs! Dont forget, the dog, is a domestic animal, not wild, they have evolved over thousands of years with man, eating what man has given them..
sandymere 8,263
skin and gut, into the freezer for a fortnight then defrost and feed, freezing saves having to worm as often and skinning and gutting saves freezer space as you just store the best stuff. Romany 1,065
I gut them, then throw them in skins, head, feet the lot..shit comes out like them superballs you could get at one time..
Gin 498
I freeze now for three weeks, and gut but leaving the organs in , and give the rabbit, with skin, and feet, to the dog. The heads go in for the ferrets. My old Lurcher used to eat the complete rabbit, after freezing. I have never heard of a dog having problems with the skin, but i'm not saying it can't happen, just unusual. There was always a massive noticable difference in my old lurcher when fed rabbit. Much more life about her, and more of a "bounce". That was in just 24 hours of feeding it.

jimster68 123
ive a pup thats 16 weeks old ,he was weaned on minced rabbit ive had him for eight weeks and he has had rabbit 2or 3 times a week with and without the fur on ,but a always freeze for two weeks and gut first .the ones with the skin on just take longer for the pup to eat and this helps tire the pup out .he eats head ,feet ears ,the lot with no problems what so ever.
