artic 595
I have a 2nd Gen Deerhound/Grey/Saluki/Grey. A joy to work with. I have seen a few 1st cross deerhound greyhounds, and can only comment on what I have seen. They can be a little slow, however I've not seen a half hearted one, and definitely not seen one which is scared to commit. Quote Link to post
COSH 14
ive seen with my own eyes, 2 first crosses that i would be pleased to own myself, went out with them many times hunting up fell ground in south east Cumbria, and the deer/greys caught some good hares, they were also good foxing lurchers and were lamped at all quarry. ive never owned a first cross but the ones ive seen first hand were decent enough to fill a freezer. ive seen many more on video, though some of these would be second/third generation deer/greys, however they were picking up rabbits for fun! the best lurcher i ever had was a deerhound/saluki/greyhound, she had a good chunk of deerhound in her, and bred out of an excellent half cross bitch that took all game, and had a love of foxing. Doxhope on here breeds some useful lurchers, and many of people around the country have had good workers out of his kennels. i think it must depend on the base stock used, as there are not many lines about that are true old style working stock. now im not breed blind at all, in fact ive owned more lurchers of different breeding, but to call the deer/greys useless is UTTER BULL SHIT. johnny boy68 11,726
When I got into lurchers many moons ago there was a good gene pool of "working" deerhound blood around, and a lot of bitza's had deerhound in their making and before the saluki become more prominent deerhound was the choice of many. These days with the show brigade turning the deerhound into a wolfhound clone its very hard to find working deerhound's that are worked to the standards of them by-gone days.Though they are out there you'll find most of the best blood-lines are kept close Quote Link to post

thorne43 1
i have a deer/ grey and he turns great for the size of him. i walk my deerhound grey with me mate and he has two whippets, im sure they have taught him to turn. hes quite good on the bunnys and most things i point him at. hes great i take him everywhere and he goes on what ever hes pointed at. hes not fantastic at everything but he will have a good go. like i say im happy with him. he does what i want! and if you really dont believe they do rabbits with ease, theres a dvd on ebay and the first twenty minutes is full of deerhound crosses smashing rabbits! i will get the name of the dvd up! ihatealiens 0
I have a 16 week old out of an F1 Rhodesian Ridgeback x Deerhound / Greyhound. The owner of the parents had a 30 year history of both parents families and both are great working lines with pictures going back for the 30 years of the bags they have all caught (all quarry). A fabulous history and can't wait to get going with her but I will have to be patient as I won't be doing a tap with her until she is at least 12 months old. She really is blossoming and is 18 kilos already - gonna be a monster. Quote Link to post
macker 5
if there is a problem in england with alot of the deerhounds why not put some weaton terrier in them can work a treat i honestly think they are decent base line in a lurcher with terrier crosses rather than first and second crosses dont get me wrong had a real good first cross bitch but could not get a decent pup out of her she was a once off that served me well mack Quote Link to post
