iceman001979 1,316
Why do people keep coming on and ruining threads if you have nothing say about a topic that is off any use don't say any think go on face book or twitter and talk your bull shit. This forum is about lurchers and running dogs and people who want talk about different dogs and the way there run and hunted and different breeds . So back to the topic bedington whippets are great rabbiting dogs and for such small dogs can take on lot more if asked they have great feet good coat easy trained and the cold weather does not annoy them and nice and small can get into places where most luchers cant in my eyes if your looking good rabbit dog you cant go wrong with one Quote Link to post
bird 9,873
Dont want to put every bed whippet owners back up but... before I start 13 years ago I breed a 26 inch saluki lurcher to a M drews bed whippet alfred as you can tell by his name he was a typical example of the breed. My bitch pup took back after him in looks and finnished at 19- 20 inches. she served me well on rabbits taking 10 - 15 rabbits on a good few nights. If she came up a bigger animal as I hoped for Im sure she would have been better again on rabbits and more versatile. What is the point in purpouslie breeding a small bed whippet when a whippet will do the same job? A 23 inch lurcher dog will do a better job on the lamp, ferreting and catching flushed game. Its not that I dont like the bedlington in the mix but why not use a greyhound to make a bigger dog? Alot that iv seen strugle (unlike whippets) to catch rabbits in the open only succeding on the hedge line. i.m.o there to small for a lurcher and to big for a terreir. Thank you hunting people. there are some very good bed x greys about, and i think you are right you dont need the whippet in the mix or a pure whippet,? The bedxgrey are not a big lurcher (22 24in 40-50lb) plenty of speed, feet+coat not bad, and should have enough (fire) in the belly for old charlie. They should handle the rough weather like now, a good small to mid size lurcher carnt see the point of smaller or faster dog, when this will do any job asked of it. And i am not a beddy fan, i prefer colliexgrey or bullx grey more so 1 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
Firstly i will say that every lurcher owner should be able to own whatever type of lurcher he/she likes and which suits there needs. The question of why would you want a beddy whippet. Lots of opinions have been put across but one thing that comes to my mind that i have not seen in any posts is as follows. Just my personal opinion but i think some farmers can be put off a little if you turn up to ferret with a big lurcher, say 25"+ 50lb+. I would have more confidence of getting permission on a new place if i tuned up with a beddy/whippet or whippet, whippet type. I have owned big and small but for ferreting i think a beddy/whippet etc can do a very good job without making some farmers a little nervous. I must also say if your farmers have no preference big dogs can be great for the job. 1 Quote Link to post

I would agree with that I had my beddy whip on a job with me on a farm recently the farmer was so taken with her I've now got permission for ferreting and lamping with her there, she was spot on around his dairy herd for the couple of days we were there. She's a bit young for the lamp yet but i'll be up there with the ferrets once the snows gone. It's also a good size dog if ,like mine, they're living indoors. I would also add mine is no better stock broken than my freiends dogs who are much bigger dogs, but it's maybe less intimadating for some farmers than other types when trying to get new permission. pipa 299
when i set out to look for my first lurcher for rabbiting only,i didnt want anything to big, so i decided on a beddy whip, but, i wanted one around 21"? and more to the whipp side, and i kno where youre coming from, cos some of these crosses can throw smaller than mine, so i did a bit of home work, and got told make sure the dam was a whipp, and a decent sized one, sire was a 22" beedy whipp, so this ticked all the boxes for me! and shes turned out 21" and very whippety! lamps! bushes! excells at rabbing, so couldnt ask for anymore of her, some people just like the looks of these little dogs, others think you cant beat this breed? i guess its there own prefrence, like i said i kno where youre coming from with a dog 23" ive seen some cracking dogs this size, and prob next lurcher i get would be around 23"? hope i aint cotradicting my self? cracking little bitch that,a credit to ye,atb jamiew pippas looking well in the pics pal when the weathers better wel av to go out again atb popps will do mate, hope it thaws out soon its doing my head in this weather, off out ferreting hopefully boxing day????
