just a question, sorry if it's a thread hijack, but how come people put cheap optics on a rimmy "because it's only a rimfire" and then go and spend a grand on a scope for a CF rifle, surely, the nature of the beast is the same, low light means clear, bright optics are mandatory? I shoot my rimmy well into the last knockings and am thankful for the S&B 6x42 (Hungarian)optics as they do make a huge difference, compare that next to my 3-9x56 IR Walther I have on the air gun for nocking squirrels, ferals and the like over, and the difference, really is night and day!

I don't see how, if you take the clarity and so the resolution out of the equation compare both scopes at the same distance, say 80m, an average rabbit engagement distance with an HMR? You are still left with low light transmission in a cheaper scope that will give up the ghost sooner and be less bright than a better quality scope, and especially with rabbits, being quite small, dark, often against a dark background (unless it's snowing!) trying to accurately place a shot into the head, so every extra bit of light transmitted surely is a good thing? (especially since the gulf would widen the greater magnification the scopes (assuming identical mag and obj. bell dia.) It just seems to me to be a bit of a false economy.... (

perhaps it's like buying a semi custom rifle over a bargain bin rifle, the latter will get the job done, but when it counts, the semi custom rifle will perform.... I dunno, perhaps not a great comparison

fair'nough I guess it's that rabbits are always going to be there so if you lose the extra 15 mins 1/2 hr at the end of the day before you either have to go home or switch on the lamp, it's not the end of the world, but perhaps if you're stalking and you need to make the cull number up or you are presented with a "once in a lifetime" trophy shot, then you're not going to want to miss it! :D

Nice looking rifle, bud.

Still waiting on my FAC!(4 months now)

I waited 11 weeks on my F A C coming through mate, I have heard of people waiting 7/8 months and also people waiting 4 weeks. My mate waited 7 months on his and he phoned up only to be told it had been sent out 2 months prior, he then questioned his wife who said " I think thats up in the cupboard " :realmad:

Well lads, just back from trying out my new .22lr, well impressed. We set up Bisley air rifle targets at 25 yards and after a few tweaks on the scope we were hitting or clipping the bull each shot. We shot 100 CCI Mini Mags, 20 Winchester T22s and 20 Eley subsonics. At that range there was no significant difference between the rounds. I am happy that any small game will pay the price if it comes within 80 yds. We retreated into 1 of the out buildings and waited for some crows to settle and 2 paid the price with a Mini mag each at about 40 yards, there wasn,t much left of them and now the .22lr is cleaned and put away for next time.

another thing, when you leave the gun in the cabinet take the mod off else the corrosive gases will seep back down the barrel and corrode it, I was talking to the guy in the gun shop the other day and he said that someone came in to tade in a rifle that had only fired 5 or 6 shots over as many years and the barrel was corroded to hell because of this very reason (plus he never cleaned it)

having said that some people never clean their .22s and don't suffer any problems....

This is a tricky one as I always advocate gun cleaning, but these are rimfires, not centrefires, this sort of damage to a rimfire is not common, and you will have noted many on this site NEVER clean their rimfires or take their mods off!

Spend whatever you want or can afford on a scope for any tool.

Simple fact is there are some perfectly acceptable dusk/dawn scopes available at sensible prices that can deal with rimfires ranges perfectly adequately.

It is not all optics either, the construction of "centrefire" scopes is generally better and the weight usually goes up, this is not required for rimfires as they are much kinder to scopes!

At the end of the day nobody will stop you putting 2lb plus of Nightforce on your rimfire if you want to, but even if I was Bill Gates I wouldn't!

ATB!
