stroller 341
Well Maggie has just come out of season and the snow has retreated for the moment so it was of out with the ferrets for a few hours. the little bitch isnt at her best as the deep snow curtailed her exercise and being in season knocked her out of sorts, but we both needed a run out so we headed for a rabbit healthy area where i have permission, i couldnt get into the village where i normally park for snow and ice so parked on the out road and walked in we have worked this area for a fair few seasons but the little dog found a few new sets but i need a ferreting partner to do a most of them, so i picked the tried and tested easy holes and wasnt dissapointed two easy bolts into nets and a back netted rabbit that got away by tangling the net on a root deep inside the bury and me snapping it off. this had bolted and turned into a hole where maggie proceeded to bite and dig at the hole something she hasnt done before but obviously she knew it was netted but couldnt get to it i was impressed with this behaviour and later on in the day she did it again in what looked like a five hole set but turned out to be a serious of 1 holers and the rabbit was just below the surface i actually pulled the rabbit out. I netted a few holes on an ancient open set just to give her a run and the rabbits duly obliged but she couldnt get into gear on the cow hoof ploughed field it was rock hard out there with and inch or two of snow and the rabbits where making it to the next warren by the skin of their teeth. i ferreted a 4m section of old holly hedge with just maggie marking and she pulled out 2 rabbits from hole mouths and lost one as it sneaked off. with 5 in the bag i decided to go home and crossed a big grass field i didnt notice her put up a rabbit which made a suicide bid to cross over 100m of field she caught this fairly easily but made a right pigs ear of the retrieve. (Something to work on) all in all a very pleasing day beautiful picture post card setting but too rock hard for running dogs feet especially an unfit dog but she escaped injury and slept like a log on the way back in the van, we got to Mc donalds where i coursed a large big mac meal and she had a cheeseburger probably not the best working dog diet but hey she deserved it and so did i. 1 Quote Link to post
Guest crobinc840
Good write up, it's nice to see someone writing the truth on how their dogs progressing. She deserved the burger and it keeps a bit of winter weight on(at least that's my excuse). Quote Link to post
