THE GRIFF 8
How about a 22 hornet, if you are shooting alot of bunnies it will be reasonably cheap to feed if you load your own and will kill fox's to 150 yards. They are also reasonably quiet with a moderator compared to other centrefires. Not a very popular calibre nowadays but under rated, I am currently looking for one for myself. Quote Link to post
andyf 144
Hello guys i am after some advise i am going to apply for my firearms cert i have the land about 400 acres of hill and just wondering what gun i should buy.I currently have a shotgun cert and have always been into air rifles so i know a little bit but i am after a rifle that is accurate and can kill about 150 yards plus .I intend on shooting foxes and rabbits and am looking for a rifle that is reasonable priced and has reasonable priced ammo what would you all recommend to start off .I heared a 22 is not that accurate i was recommended a 222 is this good advise i also want this gun moderated hope somebody can help Well Lee, a .223 is the easiest/cheapest to own and feed, the hornet and 222 are OK, but both have their shortcomings, the 222 is almost exactly the same as the 223 but ammo is more expensive, and the Hornet is not really as powerful as the other 2, and just as expensive to feed. But the main advantage of the .223 is that rifles can be got in just about all the makes and styles, and because they are very common the prices tend to reflect that, also trading in later for something else is also easier. On a slightly different tack, when moving to centrefires you may well be a bit shocked by the cost of ammo, £1+ a pop is just about average, so when you zero your new 'toy' you could spend £10 just getting a hole 'on the paper', so you may want to think about reloading, not just now but when your settled with it, also if you reload the calibre you choose doesn't matter half as much as when you are dependant on factory fodder. My current fox rifle is a 22.250, I've owned several of these and a 223, so I can say with experience there's not much in it, both are excellent, the '250 is very loud the 223 only quite loud, a moderator will sort that out, but they are heavy and cumbersome, I am not convinced about CF moderators at this time, even though both of my CF's have them fitted. But that's something for you to try and decide for yourself. AndyF Quote Link to post
