Starting Ferreting

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

I am thinking of starting ferreting. I have done a little research on the subject, but would like to know more.

Could someone please explain the basic needs for one or two ferrets, housing, food, etc?

Also the basic equipment needed for working ferrets?

And could you run me through the process of your average days ferreting?

Thankyou very much.

hi there ,

well its good to see you are interested in starting ferreting.Too home two ferrets i would get a good two tier hutch , as this gives plenty of room for the ferrets to run around in while they are not out working the ground. For bedding use shredded paper this is very cheap to buy and easy to get hold of. For the rest of the hutch use wood shavings.Feeding your ferrets , well you can buy ferret food or use game,if you know anyone who goes shooting politely ask them if you can have a few pigeons or what ever, this varies the diet.If you are buying your ferrets from 8 weeks of age dont work them til they are about 6 month old as they will be then strong enough.Get your self about 10 nets to start with , a ferreting box and a box and coller and a spade. This is expensive but will last you for hell of a long time if looked after right.Get knocking on keepers doors and farmers asking for permission for a bit of permission for rabbititng im sure theyll be happy for you to kill a few bunnies fro them

Best of look

all the best with ur new venture bud, as said before get ur self hooked up with someone all ready doing a bit, if you do decide to get a few ferrets in try ur local butchers they'll sell u some scraps, you could also use good quality cat food when scraps not available but make sure plenty of water is available when feeding dry. also road kills aslong as it's fresh.

Before you get all the gear etc which will be quite expensive try and get somebody local to you to give you a day out and see if you like it .If you enjoy it them you might be able to get a couple of kits from them .

Just looking through old posts . Got a quick question for the ferret people . How often do you work your ferrets and is there a minimum you should work them? I E do ferrets need to be worked frequently or can they be worked occasionally so long as they have adequate entertainment in their hitch

I ferret once or couple of times a week in the season but out of season they don't get worked but still give them plenty of exercise letting them walk round my local field or just playing in there cage. There's a book called complete guide to ferrets by James McKay will tell you all you need to know. Brian Plummer has couple of good books also. As already said try get out with someone before you buy all the gear so you know it's for you. Atb mate

Ask the person your getting your ferrets from to show you what they house their animals in and do the same, same person should be able to put you onto someone to show you a trick or two, but getting some were to ferret on is the biggest hurdle.

I'm just entering my second season, and as stealthy1 said, the biggest hurdle is getting permission to ferret.

I was lucky to meet a lad through thl that sorted me out with a couple of well bred jills, and took me out on his perm to show me the ropes.

Since then i've only managed to gain one permission on a sports club, but i'm still knocking on doors trying for more.

Last season I had a dog, 2 ferrets, a dozen shite nylon nets that someone palmed off on me, and no experience or real idea. This season I have the dog, 3 ferrets, quick set longnet, 2 dozen quality handmade poly nets, A SPADE, some experience, 1 permission and an addiction to ferreting!
