why do people buy dogs

why do so many people keep buying dogs, when theres lurcher rescue and other organisations that have loads of strays, which some can be made into good dogs with time and effort, some just buy them give them a week and get rid,you carnt find out about a dog in a week, theres loads of good lurcher men on here that take pride in there dogs and wouldnt part with them for the world, lets think about dogs that are passed from pillar to post not knowing who the owner is and then because they havent caught in the first week are sold again, thats why theres so many in kennels if your going to buy a lurcher what ever cross, take time look at the dog before you buy it and see if you think you can make the dog set it as a challenge to yourself and if you do make it a good dog then you would keep it for life this is not a dig at anyone but theres so many lurchers out there that need a chance to settle down with someone merry xmas happy new year john.

I have had 3 rescue lurchers over the last decade or so. First one most people would not have looked twice at, yet she were a good grafter. Found her wandering on our shoot, kept her and she kept me.

IF people only bred dogs that were needed, wanted and had homes to go to: we wouldn't need rescues.   IF people didn't treat the dogs they have as disposable toys: we wouldn't need rescues.   IF p

I do a bit of work at a rescue kennels in Devon once a month, (website etc) and every visit, I see a new lurcher or two there, nearly always very useful looking types, all very worthy of a place infront of someones fire (not stuck in a cold kennel in the garden). it makes me sad. Certainly I reckon there should be a 1 year respite on all staffie litters as they have up to 10 staffs a week coming in as dumped/strays/unwnted :censored: :censored:

I see where you are coming from but rescuing a dog is not for everyone...

I wanted a puppy, end of.

Lurcher pups in rescues would be totally unknown breeding. Could be half whippet, half deerhound etc.

Just one example of one person who didn't want to rescue, this time.

As I say I'm not against rescues, my parents rescued 2 dobermann adults when I lived at home and both are great.

Maybe in the future when my little girl is older I will rescue a little bushing dog and if it didn't work it would stay as a pet anyway.

Just wanted to point out that there are lots of personal circumstances that prevent people going to a rescue.

All the best

hi there,

I'm afraid its just the throw away culture we have in britain today. folk buy lurchers and if doesnt turn out as they dreamt/hoped they just dump it and start again, until they waste the next dog then go through the process again. i'm sorry but with some of the pseudo hunters in the game now they want instant success even if they have to go through lots of dogs trying to buy it.

Just as i see it Pernod

There are many many scenarios.. A good dog man will almost certainly want to train his own...know the breed... The bloodline.... The age.... And most definately, its capabilities...

people who have a high turn over of dogs never have anything decent . and never will. i look at some girls with 3or 4 dogs on the fields shitting every were and think if it was £50 a year for a dog license in 10 years time there wont be many need rescuing ,it would have to be enforced like the council traffic wardens do with the parking

silly man. iv had a few dogs and they dont all stay. out of the ten or fithtenn dogs iv owned over the years iv had 3 i bet your dogs could not have lived with. if you keep lurchers as pets then you can keep them forever good or bad. Mine have to ern there place in the kennel most dogs get dropped of to the shelters for one reason.

ive had 3 dogs out of kennels over 30 years two terriers and our lass had a collie only one of the terriers didnt have any mental health issues, the collie poor soul was ruined and she didnt live to an old age due to her aggressive nature.

There should only be licensed breeders there is too much back street breeding going on and im afraid the lurcher coupled with the bull terriers are the most disposable breed owned by idiots who want a status symbol and believe a dog is a social status symbol, i know someone who works with prisoners mainly young men and its amazing how many have pit bulls, staffs, presa, rottys, american bulls, dogue de bordeaux you know all of the breeds its all part of the image. Dont get me wrong some of these lads really love their dogs but i recently heard of a dog with a smack habit and bull terriers on steroids!!

and what will a licence acheive apart from people with money and nice kennels breeding dogs? do they tell you what kind of dog you can breed no. we live in a hitler state as it is we dont need more of it. some of the best dogs that ever have been breed were in garden sheds in BACK STREETS! ! next door to the abortionists and the tattoist. I know a murderer in prison and hes got yorkshire terreir  someones being a bit snobby there.
