Fancied a trip out today to fully test me new BSA Super10 MK2 after not seeing much on its maiden voyage, Left the house at 8am for the 45min drive, Flask of hot tea in tow :) Got to the drive up to the farm and doves where as usual scattering everywhere, aswell as feral pigeons.

Farmer was out so i parked up and had a walk to find somewhere to check my zero, still spot on so lets see where the pigeons and doves are playing.

They seemed to be all over and not settling in any particular spot, the grain store is normally a good bet for a few so i snuck in the back way.

004-4.jpg?t=1292612317

Managed a few out of here but i know of a little hot spot in the shape of a little green chicken shed, about 6ft long and 5ft wide, with a 1ft square opening, perfect for poking the rifle out of.

The farmer is back now and fills the troughs with food for his hens, doves and ferals come from nowhere, theres no chance they can see me in this little shed, its ideal, and a few ferals and doves bit the dust untill they got wise and kept there distance. The farmer tells me a cockerill escaped last night, but not to worry because he was for the pot anyway and that if i saw him on my travels to bring him back, "preferably not moving" as this would save him a job of knecking it. Birds are everywhere now but they are keeping their distance so i settle into the big barn on my stack of hay bales, managed 2 more in here before the light faded, les popped his head in and told me he was putting the lights on in the big barn and that he could hear large numbers in the rafters, i got into position just as the lights came on and thwacked a few more from the roof. The light was gone now and it was gettinG cold, so i gatherd my decoys and bits and bobs and packed away, not before taking a few photos for you lads, i know how much you love your photos lol

nice, really nice, lucky sod getting to shoot his cockerell

I know :D You would think he would of been easy to spot, but it took me 2 hours to catch him, theres a beck running through the bottom fields and he was just having a nice drink out of it when he got a bisley magum through his head  lol

:clapper: loved thw write up

I'd love a piece of permission such as that

Where did you place the pellet on the Cockerell?

Behind and slightly above its eye phantom, The pictures were of its right side, it was shot on the left, i meant to take a close up aswell DOH!! There was no sign of the exit of the pellet, guess they have hard heads?? you should of heard the "thump" from the magnum as it struck. Never shot one before and they are big birds so i thought the head shot would be best, not much chance of gettin through to its heart or lungs because of the size of the thing lol

Right, yeah they are Big and I can imagine the sound of the crack  Not as big as a Goose and they are big buggers, but a pellet to the noggin works well on them as well :D

SPA for common sense and a nice job done well

Cheers mate  It did kick for a good 30seconds or so, i even pulled the bolt back ready to take a second shot, but as i did it sort of slumped down and i knew it was gone, Felt strange and slightly "guilty" for want of a better word, i couldnt of asked for a better placed shot though, maybe the wierd feeling of killing it was because id never shot one before, But the way permission is to get hold of on farms you cant really turn down a request from the landowner can you, afterall if you dont do it then he will always find someone else who will.

Great write up millsy, loving the photos good shooting, you are clearly getting on with the new rifle, and a cockrell I bet that made your day :), you think perhaps it was a set challenge by the farmer to put you to the test? If so you passed with flying colours.

How did you manage gaining permisson there? Looks great.
