I was in the same situation so decided to get a JRT pup. Hes 6 months old now hes been in the thickest cover from the first time off the yard. He had his first rabbit stay to long and ended it the other day. Upto yet not regreted it at all

Thanks for all the replies, some lovely dogs posted to. I think the wife would favour a cocker, as she grew up around working gundogs. While I would prefer a terrier. So how much with these dogs is instinctive and how much do You have to train them.

ive used terriers in the past and they are great but the little b*****ds do go to ground when you dont want them too i prefer a spaniel preferably a cocker and when my lad moves out and takes his dog and stays out for a year ive promised myself a pup.

Things are going great with My first lurcher He is growing into a lovely dog. Looking forward to getting out and about with Him next year, have couple of permissions under My belt. I plan to do mainly mooching and some ferreting. While My lad is still young I am toying with the idea of getting a team mate. Looking for something to work the cover and flush it for lurcher. What do people use or suggest, and what does it add to Your team.

I use a cocker, flys through the cover. great drive with them!

Great looking team, Do You shoot with the Cocker as well?

Well it looks like we have it down to either a Beddy or a Cocker. Father in-law is very involved in various shoots threw out the south so would also like to double up the dog for a beat of beating and possible retrieving work so looks more like a cocker.

Can anyone recommend any breeders of either of My favored breeds.

Thanks

Best ratching dog i have ever seen was a whippet x cocker spaniel, it would go through anything superb nose and it out caught the lurchers on many days. A beddy whippet would do a good job, game, good nose, good jacket and should not want to go to ground. A smaller one around 17/18" would be just the job, would catch a few itself.

From experience to date Jrts but am intrested to see how beddies perform. I dont think it matters what you put with your lurcher I think it is about regulary working them together over you permission. This alows the lurcher to posisition itself where it gets used to the rabbit bolting. Like herdwick said he has 4 jrts and with the lurcher they work well on the ground they know even the wize terriers position themselves in a goal hanging position and pick up the goods. so dont be too fussy just get a terrier and get out there and build up the teams confidence  oh and have fun

I do shoot over her aswell, but not as often as i would like. She's mostly used to flush for the lurcher.

She works extremley hard and has bags of stamina. Although her retrieving isn't what i would want it to be, she's not as driven on the retrieving as the springers i've had before.
