i have started making my own purse nets and much as i am enjoying it i have had a problem with my last net, when tying a single sheet bend it has been inverting, that is it ends up tight onto the threads on the mesh board not the loop above which it should tighten onto. this means the meshes slip. the material is spun poly so is fine to single knot and my first net was fine. not sure why its doing it really, it is fine when i double knot but it takes much longer to do.

sounds to me that your not holding the thread down with your thumb long enough,

When you come up through the mesh you should be holding the thread down with your thumb now throw a loop(to the left if your needles in your right hand)and take your needle round the back of the loop now DONT close the knot bring the needle across the front of the loop then bring the needle up through the loop(where you started) now draw the knot to a close, its a lot easier than it sounds

sound advice as always mate. just practise practise practise, soon you'll be doing it with ya eyes closed.

Leeview's right also make sure that the loop you're tieing onto is pulled down tight to the mesh board and held down tight . Sounds like you're relaxing a little bit too soon

Exactly as has been said really .........when you get it right you should feel the knot forming beneath your thumb just as you tighten it.

Keep practising..........there's not a net maker in existence who has not formed a slip-knot at one time or another.

keep practicing mate you will get there in the end making less and less mistakes when i first started making nets years ago the air was blue with F**KS but the more i did it soon fell into place can now make a net other than the 1st 2 rows without hardley looking at it and watching the tv good luck with it mate its a great feeling when you catch that 1st rabbit in a net you made yourself

thanks for the advice, isn't the knot you are describing a carrick bend, what i am calling a double knot? i am using a aluminium mesh board and pulling the mesh down tight to the top edge and holding it tigt against the fornt of the board not the top edge so that might be where i am going wrong. because i have to let go of the tension in order for the knot to form . thanks for the help i will persevere, out of interest how do you guys hold your meshboard/ hold the tension any pictures. i find them easier when it comes to net making. another issure too when tying and expanding mesh, one of the two loops keeps slipping even when doubled possibly the same reason though

I use an aluminium mesh board too, it's about 4 inches long .

I pull the loop down to the top edge, my thumb just covers this so I can't actually see the knot forming but I can feel it. I'm right handed so it's my left hand that keeps everything tight. I know it sounds like the same ol' thing all the time but it does take practise.Tieing nets is about developing your own style. Your knots slipping when you increase or decrease is just because they ain't tight enough...you're being too nice with it .....give it a bloody good tug

Yes it is a Carrick Bend I call it a single knot as opposed to a double knot which is 2 seperate knots,one on top of the other,and yes you need to be holding the thread to the top edge, finger behind and thumb in front of your meshboard. this should sort the increasing out as well

aah i have just been usinng my thump without the finger behind, ok odd sounding sentence. and i tried pulling harder and snapped the twine, i think this should work but anyway once i stop swearing and turn out another good net i will let you know.
