macker 5
was doing my best to keep off this topic. in reply to shamo which alot of his post i agree . but a good weaton is very game and are not a breed to compare to each other. the bull is a killing machine the weaton a working dog to me its like comparing a staff to a patterdale one will kill the other but its hard not to respect the terrier. and every thing in hunting seems easy until you give it a try especialy if its a competition. some of my friends that like the bulls not agree with me but. just to me its not all about killing but have seen plenty of terriers that would fight to death if allowed but show them a dark hole with something at home and some of them just dont want to know. just my opinion macker Quote Link to post
chris hickling 14
its nice to see people with different views, whether you agree or disagree, each to there own, you do what you want with your dogs and the breed or cross you keep, not every 1 will like the same and im glad they dont or the would would be a sad place to live. Guest grubygrafter
mattyq. your dogs looking well. whippetlady. hi your pups looking awsome shamo. where i am working my dogs they need a weatherproof coat good feet in this respect the wheaten crosses seem to do ok. as you can see he is only 23 inches tts. and is a whippet cross. he is up to the job no probs. how game does a lurcher need to be . i have little experience of bull crosses so cant compare . but i'm sure they are also handy dogs Quote Link to post
Shamo 319
Nice post mack............Wheatens not game Shamo...????.......... ........I'm pretty sure some friends of mine from over the water would disagree with you there.....................My one friend had a dog there & said it is without a doubt the gamest animal he's ever seen.......This is from a true dogman who has worked bulls & irish staffs in the same context..........Its one thing performing in your own enviroment e.g. a bullx in an open field but a whole different ball game when your down in the dark with your quarry who is in his own enviroment........Not that I'm knocking bulls or bullx's , I own one & have seen some very game dogs but I think sayin that a wheaten isnt game is a bit naive......... Sometimes it depends on what you consider the word 'GAMENESS' to mean. I am sure your mate has had a Wheaton be the gamest Dog he has ever seen. One Swallow doesn't make a Summer though. There are levels of Gameness too, which can differ from person to person. I agree totally about the going in the dark thing and working in it's own environment. I am first and foremost a Terrier Fan. There isn't much better than seeing a little 14lb Dog go in for Hours and do the business, in the dark! I have seen a Dog pull when the Animal the other end has his Tongue hold, but he still pulled until it saw daylight and then it let go and he was able to get a grip. It took a certain amount of gameness to do this, but it doesn't make the Dog GAME. I do not want to get in to a pointless discussion which can go nowhere on a public Forum. You would need to know me to know what I mean when I say Wheatons are not Game, as you would then know what I mean by the word GAME. Each to their own. Quote Link to post

Guest JDF
regarding their usage for lurcher breeding it's irrelevant wether the base dog is game or not as once crossed with a non game bred dog such as a greyhound the gameness in the true sense of the word is gone. it's hard enough breeding game using game.i don't think the bull cross makes a better terrier mans dog than the wheaten, just my opinion of course Quote Link to post
whin 463
are they easy going with other dogs or are they aggresive etc the one my freind has was abugger but was not worked ,all the best Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
are they easy going with other dogs or are they aggresive etc the one my freind has was abugger but was not worked ,all the best some will be some won't,my grandfather gave me a wheaten when i was 11 as a companion for me and to deter cats from around his pigeon lofts,an absolute nutcase of a dog when it was around other dogs, fought with everything it seen.ended up being taken away from me when it killed a nieghbours lapdog, took abit of her finger off too. Shamo 319
I personally do not want to comment about the Trials, as I have never entered a Dog in them. I believe in talking from experiences I have had, that way you can actually discuss things with a little more passion. Gameness......what is Gameness, to some just going in a hole is Game. To others working thick cover with split Ears and black thorn digging in, is game. There will be countless discussions about Wheatons and not everybody will agree. That is Dogs for you. I personally think it doesn't take much gameness for a Dog weighing in excess of 40lb going in and drawing anything smaller than itself. The Wheaton was also bred to work 'mute', this does not mean the Dog is Game guys, it just means he doesn't speak when he is hurt! To some I guess that is game, sorry but not me. I have seen far too many Dogs 'cur out' which have made no noise right up to the point of saying "no more for me"! I am biased towards my type of Dog, but can see why Wheatons can be admired. I just don't want the World and his Brother falling into the Trap of buying a Wheaton from across the Water, or anywhere, thinking because it is a Wheaton you have a drawing Dog. I would think the true Wheaton fans would agree. A truly game Wheaton Terrier is like Rocking Horse Shit and I do not care what anyone says!! Quote Link to post
