stevethefish 80
Well we had a few hours ferreting yesterday, but it seemed like a long time. We decided to give some rough ground a bash that I had reccied a few weeks ago, at that time it was heaving with bunnies but the cover was high. With all the snow and ice the cover was almost completely gone, amazing considering how bad it was. We started immediately as we got out of the van, the dogs jumped out and marked at the side of where we had parked. A good start as 2 bolted immediately putting a grin on our faces. The area is a mass of mounds of soil and rubble that has been tipped when the lakes were excavated leaving a rabbit paradise. Moving on to the next mound we had a dig within a couple of minutes, the ferrets had nailed one and with no movement on the box it would have been stupid to wait. We actually dug 2 from that set but that seemed to be the order of the day as we moved down the mounds. For some reason they were very reluctant to bolt which left us with no other option but dig. It does slow you down tremendously and obviously the result is fewer rabbits in the bag. We got down to the bottom banking where the quarry starts and this was deep, you could see some of the bolt holes drop over 3 feet straight down immediately. We set about dropping a few ferrets in, there were over 30 holes but the rabbits could take some finding in such a big set. As one of the ferrets re-appeared close to me I picked it up and lifted the bottom of another net and dropped the ferret in. Just as I did this a rabbit bolted, and as the draw string tightened it flew past my eye and caught the side of my face, that was almost a black eye. We managed a few more before we had a couple more digs, one on the top where it was really rocky at 4 foot and another down the side at over 5 foot. It was like trying to dig to Australia I can tell you, not too bad when the ground is easy going but thats never the case. We had a scout around and had a couple more before heading back, a tally of just 18 was all we could achieve this time, all because of the digging but we still enjoy it and its a few less chewing crops.
