Pups first day out ferreting

Recommended Posts

So Willow is 3 months old now, and we thought we would take her out with Parker, the experienced ferreter, to show her the ropes. We just wanted her to get an idea of whats going on, avoid the ferrets and know whats coming out of the holes! So we only took 2 ferrets and no nets, just to bolt out for Parker. W were returning to a bit of old permission that had apparently been well ferreted by some by the 'new boys' so as we approached the fields were werent expecting a big catch, if any!

We got to the first bury that parker marked and popped the ferts down, and out popped a rabbit. Parker was bang on it chased it across the field and stopped it just before the hedge. Retrieved it live to hand from a long run. Well i was chuffed with this as big open fields isnt really his ground, but he had done well

Next bury, ferrets down, rabbit up and caught and retrieved. Even more chuffed now!

Moved on again and missed a couple but they were in much thicker cover.

Next bury, got two before they had even bolted. and then next one bolted into cover, parker lept in flush it out, coursed it across the field, and caught about 50ft in front of me :) very pleased with him.

Last bury was flushed two out but lost them both. All in all, 5 out of 8, and i was so very pleased with him, worked his socks off, and willow watched the whole thing. She picked up that something comes out and then parker comes back with a rabbit so hopefully she will be his ferreting buddy for next season. She did have a little game with the ferrets which was highly amausing!!
