good thread this. good to see other peoples take on 177. as i shoot 22. some good information there and i have fancied 177. for a while as most of my shooting is done at night. my range estimation is not that bad but i do miss too many shots, with a 177. i just might put more in the bag, most of my shooting is done at a maximum of 30 meters, most being much closer, so deffinatley something to consider. atb mick

Si I have to say mate that was exactly right what you stated above about calibre differences in hold-over and under. .177 requires a whole lot more finesseful elevation control than .22 and the crossover between calibres is by no means as easy or as straightforward as some might think. The mildot and Hawke SR and MAP reticle systems are really very good if a shooter takes the time out to learn their layouts and train himself with them.

I trained extensively with Schmidt&Bender mildot scopes during my military service and learned their values for precision shooting at targets out to ranges in excess of 1,000 metres. You can actually guage the correct height of an enemy target figure with them by placing one dot at his boots and count the numbers of dots up. That tells you how tall he is and how far off he is and your spotter fills in the details with wind values. They are that accurate.

When they started bringing them out on airgun scopes I thought They're having a laugh! What's the point? It's a needless, useless device for shooting at tiny maximums of 30-50 yards and the dots would just clutter the sightpicture. The Duplex, 30/30 reticles were more than enough if you learned how to shoot quadrantally through them. EG. You devided the sightpicture into four quarters bracketed around the centre-to-centre bi-section by learning exactly how your shot rises and falls through the ranges you expect to shoot at. It's guessing that becomes a skilled estimation in time. These newer Hawke scopes are very impressive with how well thought out they work for air rifle range estimation and hold point aiming.

Well I've bought four of them so, I might be tempted to take one or two out of the boxes yet!
