BSA r10 shooting 50 metre targets

Hi lads and lasses,

After eating some humble pie today (another post) :icon_redface: .

Here is a bit of footage that I shot well before the snow came here  .

Seeing as there has been a few posts these past couple of weeks with people suggesting that a .177 calibre rifle is more accurate that a .22, here is a BSA r10 in .22 calibre in action.

I agree the .177 parabolic trajectory is flatter than a .22, and I also agree that a .177 is easier to be accurate with more of the time than a .22 calibre rifle is, as range estimation in regards to hold over and hold under isn’t so important with a .177 as it is with .22 calibre.

But I’m still not convinced that a .177 is more accurate than a .22  .

I believe there both the same and more accurate than the shooter with the .22 calibre shooter requiring a better knowledge of his rifles characteristics in regards to longer range shots and being accurate than the .177 shooter does.

This is actually a great benefit of a .177 calibre rifle and one that i am only just starting to apprieciate  .

Please don’t think I’m disrespecting .177 shooters here because I also now shoot .177 as stated and I’m not.

I like .177 very much, and just love my new Ultra.

One mistake with a .22 in regards to range estimation though and you are likely to miss the target completely, usually over the top in my case.

Anyway I was plinking with Laura my girlfriend and decided to set up some 50 metre targets to see how the r10 performed.

This should show you the potential of a .22 calibre r10.

All 3 shots were shot as hold over shots from a scope on x14 mag with 5 mildots of holdover applied.

The zero range was 25 metres.

I dont think that ive put this footage up before, sorry if i have.

Hope you enjoy the short clip and this opens up a good debate on peoples own views on calibre and accuracy etc.

As you will see the .22 RWS Super Field pellet hits the targets very easy and its more to do with the individual that the calibre.

Once you click on the video clip change the quality from 360 to 720 HD for a better picture.

Nice shooting Si mate  As you've already said it's not whats more accurate its personal preference. some peeps shoot better with .177 because they cant or dont put enough practice into estimating ranges when they've used a 22. i use both and found the .177 much better for my NV where distance guestimation is so difficult. i wouldnt say 1 is more accurate than the other if it was then im sure some brian box would of worked it out mathematically and we'd all be using that calibre. IMO.

Yep true Dom buddy,

I bought my Ultra in .177 just for that reason too.

To use as a night time combo after watching Davy smash the bunnies out with his .177 last Summer at night when I was struggling with range estimation on a new permission with a my .22 r10.

I do see a massive benefit of .177 and do love it now that Ive gotten into the calibre, but in the same breath my r10 can and does everything as accurate in the day time when I can better range estimate or use my GunTuff LRF as my Ultra does at night or would do in the day time.

At the end of the day a pellet on pellet in .22 is as accurate as a pellet on pellet with a .177.

No doubt at all that a .177 takes the guess work out of range finding to 40yds or so.

But experamentation with lighter weight .22 is worth doing.

14 gr is about ideal for .22 usage at sub 12ftlb, and with practice gives outstanding results.

Its just a matter of finding what lighter .22 suits your rifle.

Well, with what I have tried anyway

Confidence, and practice play an equal part in performance.

Bill.
