Guest snatch flcc
Just thought I would write a small a piece on breeding, I am no dog breeder and as some of you have seen have just had my first real experience of pups etc and what a costly one it has been, I hope anyone breeding a litter has better luck than I did! It all started when I went to New Zealand for 4 weeks, whilst I was away I had my hungarian friend walk and clean out the dogs everyday while I was away, unbeknown to me and obviously him the bitch came into season and nature took its course, as the 2 were well bred and good workers I was not to stressed. The Bitch had her pups in the kennel without any help/interferance from me just a few emergency phone calls to Charlie C when I was panicking! She had 7 pups 3 bitches and 4 dogs, all were healthy and everthing was good. Although the ban had just come into place I felt confident that the pups would appeal to broad section of people and there would be no worries finding homes. I placed 2 ads with pics of parents in CMW and priced the pups very reasonably (£150 each) to ensure a sale, also posted a post in classifieds on here. I had a few calls and spoke to lots of timewasters, all in all only about 4 calls were genuine. as the pups were now approaching 8 weeks old and ready to go I was begining to worry a bit about finding homes. When my first genuine caller came round he liked the pups and brought his wife and kids, he said he worked his dogs mainly on the lamp and was out regularly in the winter, we had a good chat and he chose a bitch but he also fell for one of the dogs, as I was concerned about finding homes I ended giving him 2 for the price of 1! Next my girlfriends hairdresser said her mum was looking for a dog, but by now my second add had gone into cmw and geniune calls were even fewer! I ended up giving her a pup, she took a bitch, my mate who owns the dog took a dog pup for his mate, I had 3 left, I new I was going to keep a bitch but was worrying about the other 2 dogs, luckily my vet who thinks lurchers are the best dogs in the world(and rightly so) and are so easy to treat persuaded her assistants uncle to have one, I let this go for £100. I am still left with a bitch Socks who I am keeping and a dog Wrinkles ( I didnt name any of them!) who I have had to keep, both are beautiful and bundles of fun but a nightmare aswell! I know I cant keep the dog as my other dog will probably fight with him when he grows up but for now he is ok. I never bred these for profit but I had hoped I would not loose out. As it has turned out I have lost financially but learnt a great deal in the process. Due to the ban I will struggle to work all my dogs so need to cut down, I currently have 3 adult lurchers and the 2 pups, I have managed to re-home the pups mum (boots) to a lovely lady in Newmarket who walks her 3 times a day across land with a good hare population, as she said she will not be going hare coursing but if one gets up then so be it let nature take its course. The costs for the pups have been as follows extra food/milk £100-00 extra dog run panel £100-00 puppy run £30-00 toys and treats £20-00 adverts £120-00 innoculation of 2 pups £110-00 new book puppies £10-00 Miscellanous £30-00 to many hours to count total £520-00 income from pups £250-00 loss £270-00 As I stated at the begining I did not do this for money and it was a bit of an accident, I just want to say to those who may be thinking of breeding look at the reasons and if its money just be careful! I have a beautiful bitch who I think will be excellent and a dog I would love to keep but will probably have to find a home for, most importantly I have learnt an awful lot!!!! thanks to all those that helped me in crisis and tried to find homes, I do truly believe that if the ban had not come into place I would not be writing this now. If you have a litter of pups while reading this then good luck this is just my experience and hopefully you will find home quickly and not be out of pocket, good luck! Snatch PS I will post a pic of socks and wrinkles later! this is wrinkles above and below this is socks (below) I took over 40 pics and these are the best ones!!! ever tried getting 2 pups to stay still for more than 2 seconds! doxhope 2
Its amazing isnt it snatchy, but no one ever thinks of the expenditure, when I was breeding a lot, some folk had it worked out how much I was going to make, even told me, I couldnt beleive it. What they didnt add to their workings out, was the likes of what you have put down here, plus, in certain cases I was going to some of the best dogs in the country, and stud fees were anything up to £500. If the bitch didnt take, it was another stud fee later on, as when you use a stud dog you are not paying for puppies, you are paying for the services of the dog. Then with pure bred there are registrations to the Kennel club, and with deerhounds everyone wants them tested for liver shunt or cardiomyopithy etc, but they dont pay for that privilage, the breeder does. At times dog breeding, like showing, can be a mugs game. You will never make a living out of genuine dog breeding, but you will have some lovely experiences, the true rewards for breeding dogs. Oh, here we go, Im getting broody, when does that bitch come in season again? Its that puppy breath that does it for me...What does everyone else like, or dislike about having puppies around???? kiwi 4
welcome to the world of dog breeding snatch :11: ya can make money from breeding but not much, and by the time you put in ya time spent, it works out about even. i only breed when i have orders for at least half the pups and never drop the price on any left over, in fact a well bred pup is of more value at 4 mths old as some pple prefer an older pup. i breed a litter of pure boxers every second litter out of my boxer bitch which more than covers the cost of breeding the next cross breed litter{lab} and find it works out well. in your case i would have culled the litter by half, but you do have the choice of keeping on the older pups and getting them started and then selling them.
