brunty29cdo 5
my pup is 4 and half months old and already the fastest dog in the doggy playing field lol but i wouldnt let him run a rabbit as it is not worth ruining him. iv been tempted to tho as im off for another tour of afghan in march and so when i return hel be just over a year old so i will be missing a very important time for him (luckily my wife is better trainer than me) so id like to take him shooting with me with lamp and get him running the beam and retrieving shot rabbit back to me asap.im not sure if this is a good idea or not but il look forward to peoples opinion on this. a pup will grow considerably in a month or 2 so id wait out personally mate. atb mate id be interested on how it goes either way Quote Link to post
Guest deerhound hunter
you run your dog as early as 3 month and your dog will be lucky if it has 2 good seasons and thats including its first Few easy runs............not an 8 hour lamping trip on alternate slips with a collie x.Would you not start your ferreting lurcher that early? would start any lurcher untill about between 8 months day time rabbits and then 10 months lamping ,running a lurcher at 3 months old is backward Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
id get her on a few squatters and build her up nice and slow my dog started at 3 and a half months and my new pup is 9 weeks and she will be going out next week And as she goes for it with her puppy teeth and puppy ways and it legs it and she chases it across a field geting left for dust and blowing herself and generally getting demorilised. . . . . wise. No different than taking said puppy for a walk and a bunny gets up in front of it in the day Fair point, but at 3 month (remember big difference between 3 and say 4.5 month), if its out for a walk its not 'hunting' that much, theres a chance it might get up to one but its probably not going to get much of a chase, but slipping it on rabbits in the middle of a field is only going to lead to problems, you wont be able to help your self and will do another and then another. I just reckon at 12 weeks its got a few more things to learn, like which foot goes in front of the other . . .. Quote Link to post
gizmo88 1
Bird I have much respect for you and tbh your dogs are doing well but there are many ways to train lurchers and if I'm right flint08 takes all his out at 9 weeks to learn the trade as many others and he gets in the 60's with two dogs so it shows if done correctly both ways work I would love to get in those numbers but I've never had problem bringing them on younger I think each to our own but which ever way you enter them make sure you no what your doing and except that any failure in the dog is down to the owner hate people blaming the dog not there training Edited December 10, 2010 by gizmo88 Quote Link to post

I wouldnt stick him in the ring with a lad who knows how to fight. Same with the dog, i'd want it to meet its first rabbits in a slightly less unbalanced situation if i had a choice in the matter. Getting it out and experiancing is one thing but slipping it on the lamp at 12 weeks is a little early is it not? P.S Sunday? Quote Link to post
