Shall I get a second Lurcher?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've got a Beddy x Whippet bitch, 15 months old, she's a little cracker and we've got a good bond. Trouble is I'm at work all day so she's on own in the kennel. She gets 3 good walks a day , but she must stay outside cuz my youngest daughter has an allergy to dogs. I've now got the chance to get a 3 month old pup, my bitches brother from a later litter. I think they should get along being dog and bitch and of the same blood. Should I let sleeping dogs lie, or get her a companion?

I'd get her a companion mate. Dogs are naturally pack animals as I'm sure you're aware so she would relish the companionship of another dog. I got a 8 month old beddy whippet myself back in July as company for my spaniel. They get on like a house on fire and never leave eachothers side now. It's also nice seeing them play when out on walks - I think it will open up a whole new world for your currnet dog and will put your mind at rest when your at work or out etc.. knowing that your dog has company and is not bored and lonely on its own. It takes no more effort having 2 especially if they are kennelled, as you walk them, work them, feed them at the same time. Little bit more expensive obviously but if this isn't an issue and your current dog isn't dog aggressive I'd defiantley go for another one mate. atb.

Just make sure you get one of them done if you don't want any pups. At 6 months the dog will be ready and willing....

if ya have the work for another and ya can afford to keep another then get it if the answer to both of those replys is no then dont bother mate

 , i would say (no) stick with 1 dog, if you are going to work that dog. If your (not) then get 2, when you get 2 dogs what will happen if they are in the same kennel. They will (bond) with each other and not( you) :wallbash: , and thats the last thing you need in a working dog. Its happend to me with my new pup, so in the new year i will be giving him alot more time (solo) to get a better bond. Alot of people on here have more than 1 dog, but do they really have (enough proper) work for all there dogs. :hmm: ?

I was in the same position as u pal.. Had charlie in the house all day on his own nd i felt sorry for him being bored on his own, so i got a bitch pup and i'm really glad i got her! Like the other lads said, if the money isnt an issue and you have got plenty of work for both dogs then i would get the pup if i was u

I'd get 2 bud, if you work them its good to have one to fall back on if the other gets injured, plus it would most likely be a companion for the other dog, Best thing i did was get another (the 3rd really pissed ther missis off) mine all get on but there's no guarntee tho, i have 2 bithches and 1 dog

There's nothing wrong with a dog having a bond with another dog just so long as they not ONLY bonded with each other. You will have to make more of an effort if you have two dogs to make sure that each one looks to you as leader. How much or how little a problem this might be depends on you, the amount of experience you have, and the time you have to train each one individually. This might only take as little as 10 minutes a day on each dog: bit of back yard training individually before you take them both out on a walk etc. And yes, dogs do like company, but I'd make sure to introduce them to each other on neutral ground before you actually buy. And if the dogs are to be left alone in a kennel all day you will need to make sure that the new dog is already used to this type of living arrangement or you could find you have two barking, howling dogs in a kennel: bad habits are easy to gain and difficult to remove!

Suss out the previous owner if you are not getting a tiny pup and make sure the new one is used to being left in a kennel, with or without other dogs. A bit of planning and forethought can help to avoid wrong choices, wrong choices we've all made from time to time!

i did the same mate, had a stafford who was left in house while i worked and after alot of thinking i got a beddy whippet pup which i intent to work(just over 4 months at mo) and they are best mates, they both well behaved and listen, keep each other company as they just play and sleep all day.

and now my stafford is taking a massive interest in rabbits which is being passed onto pup.

dont regret it one bit! atb with your decision

I think its an excellent idea, getting it a pal. I work 3 and they all get along fine and all have a bond with me, infact my third has the strongest bond with me out of the 3. Its not just a case of having enough work its also down to the type of hunting you do, i mainly do bushing, hence two terriers and a lurcher for the bolts. If i was just i into lamping then i would possible just have one or two.

well mate i would say no. as the pup u have have now will need alot more trainin and will make life harder with two lurchers. i would wait till shes 3 or 4 as then ur trainin is done and have a experienced dogs to show her the ropes. but if ur keen on gettin her some company i would say get a terrier or a springer for day time work which in my eyes will help ur pup in alot of ways not just company.

Wise words fella. A little cocker might be the answer :good:
