rob reynolds uk 3
right then lads as it says which is the faster or should i say harder to catch ..as them 3/4 grown rabbits the other night gave my 3/4 bull x a right run around she cought a few but that was it .some seemed too have that second gear like the hares do and could turn on the spot and the dog would just over shoot ,me and brummie still enjoyed the sport though one run on one 3/4 was priceless should of had the camcorder must of turned it at least ten times and it keepet on shooting out the hedge :11: still never cought it mind you it has been neally six month since she worked rabbit apart from the odd run on the hare so what do you say which do you think is harder to catch ?? rob reynolds uk 3
dont you think that the younger 3/4 grown rabbits turn a lot faster than the fully grown ones ? the 3/4 they run, and as soon as the dogs on its tail it turns just as the dogs up to speed and the dogs only run 15 or 20 so odd yards but they turn on a six pence, my dog catchs up with the fully grown ones in no time but theses 3/4 ones the other night were fast for there size and did a lot more turning than a fully grown rabbit would have done ,im saying that over distence the dog would of out run the rabbit thats a fact but when all it does is run turn run again turn dubble back run turn again just as the dogs getting back up to speed and about to strike ..i think a smaller dog and a faster turning one would of cought a lot more than we did .have to take brummies beddy whippet out next time and see if that fairs better its not faster but does turn far better than mine .its all good fun Quote Link to post

shaun v 3
it might have something to do with the ground esp if you are running a large dog and if its firm ground they can spin on a sixpence and the dog just over shoots them, if it was on a tufty field the dog should pick them up with ease. as millet says when lamping them they are just puppy material Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
hi bog-blocker...3/4 grown are easier IMHO due to the fact that they are dumber than full grown ones....i dont beleive they can twist any better than an older rabbit.... Quote Link to post

Guest LEARNER
I WOULD SAY FULL GROWN RABBITS ARE THE HARDER TO CATCH, PERHAPS BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST OFF THIER GENERATION, IF I WANT TO GET A YOUNG LURCHER GOING I WOULD PLUMP FOR 1/2 OR 3/4 RABBITS, ESPECIALLY LAMPING, I,VE FOUND THAT I ALSO CATCH MUCH MORE RABBITS IN SUMMER ,THAN I EVER DO IN WINTER , I,VE FOUND THAT GROUND SUCH AS YOU FIND IN THE DALES OR PARTS OF SCOTLAND VERY PRODUCTIVE TO GET A YOUNG LURCHER GOING IN LATE SPRING OR EARLY SUMMER, ALSO JUST DOING A BIT OF FERRETING IN SUMMER, I,VE FOUND A YOUNG LURCHER WILL ,PICK UP A YOUNG RABBIT FAR BETTER THAN A FULLY GROWN ONE ,ESPECIALLY ONE THATS SURVIVED ALL THE CHALLENGERS OF THE PREVIOUS WINTERS, BUT I SUPPOSE ON SOME GROUNDS ,THE TERRAIN CAN SUIT A RABBIT MORE, AND THEN ANY RABBIT CAN BE THAT BIT HARDER TO CATCH, BUT I WOULD ON THE WHOLE, SAY A VASTLY EXPERIANCE LURCHER , WOULD DESTROY YOUNG OR SEMI ADULT RABBITS IN THE SILLY SEASON.
