saluki/grey with a tiny bit of bull blood,saluki grey would be ideal but some never make the grade on charlies (as in any breed),i know a lad who's kept fen dogs all his life and also used them for lamping and only ever had one or two that could manage charlie,maybe deerhound/grey x saluki/grey should make a good strong game allrounder with lungs to spare out of good breeding.atvb

well that would back up my idea of putting a good hare dog to a good (fast) fox dog.

Coursing lines Saluki lurcher from generations of fox killers, or full Saluki again from generations of fox killers. I hear so much about SalukiX's and Saluki not doing fox, it make me wonder what standard of Salukis have been used to produce such wet blankets that can't/won't kill a fragile 14-20lb fox. A Saluki or Tazi should take all quarry IMO.

 

Interestingly Fox and Hare are the main quarry hunted with Tazi in Kazakhstan and throughout Central Asia, the same is often true of the middle eastern Saluki's aswell and certainly so in N Africa, yet in the UK the Saluki is viewed as a specialized hare dog, not the Versatile all quarry hunting dog that it should be.

 

Mine would kill other dogs given half a chance let alone little foxes as others that have certain Kizzy/pharoh bred salukis will be well aware of.

 

I wonder how much of whether they do or don't do foxes is about who is bringing them on or the dogs themselve lacking something.

I'd certainly say that most lurchers should if entered properly to fox should be able to take them with ease, certainly something the size of a saluki lurcher, I'd wager that most that jack on them are entered to young on the lamp, for sure some will never have the heart to face the hard end but I reckon thats a small minority

Like has been said, the saluki types as with any other type of lurcher should take fox no issues. But foxes are way slower than hares. To me it would simply be a fast dog with plenty of wind, regardless of breeding.

No in my opinion, pre ban MOST saluki types wouldn't entertain foxes regulaly, and by regularly i'm taking several a week, not once in a blue moon. Its wasn't easy to get a quality hare dog and fox dog, they would usually be more inclined to perform better on one species. A good saluki/grey x bull/grey would of been a suitable choice but its illegal here now so all we can do is discuss the past

would it be better just try and breed for some balls in a coursing dogs?

 

some people have said you can't get the best of both,but again look at some of the threads posted by the Americans,their dogs can catch jack rabbit and coyotes so fox should be absolutely no problem to them.

Perhaps it would but i doubt a good foxing dog crossed with a superb coursing dog would of knocked hares over as well as purely a coursing bred dog, its difficult to get the best of both worlds, dogs tend to specialise although the odd world beater will pop up.

As for the American hounds, are they equally as good on jacks and yotes, or are they better on thevtoothy stuff? I don't know...........
