Birds And The Cold Weather

Recommended Posts

I had a go at making my own fat balls with fat, suet, nuts, seeds, and mealworms, but they seem to have been a resounding failure. Think i'll stick to making pies

Other than that, i've got high energy bird feed scattered in various locations round the garden. I've hung some bought fat balls [ they love them ! ] on the trees, and filled the nut feeders. Ohh, and keep a plastic tray with water as ice free as possible so they've got summat to drink/bathe in.

Got legions of little birds now. I can see this getting really expensive this winter

Mine empty a two foot feeder full of sunflower hearts every day and a sixteen inch nut feeder in two days. We have in order of greatest numbers, Blue tits, Great tits, Gold Finches, Chaffinches, Green Finches, House Sparrows, Dunnocks, Coal tits, Marsh tits, Siskins, Nut Hatch and Great Spotted Woodpecker. Occasionally we get groups of Long Tail Tits, we have Wag Tails(Pied) on the floor with our resident Doves of various X breeds. We also get, which I have never seen on any other feeders Reed Buntings, just a pair but they have come for the last two years. I have also seen recently a Brambling, oh and we also get our resident Black Birds, Robins and the Wrens have roosting nests around the place.

We get lots of winter birds visit the orchard and these mainly consist of Field Fares, Starlings, Thrushes, Red wings along with other resident birds that feed on the fallen fruit.

I get through over 140kg of seed and nuts a year :icon_eek: mainly sunflower hearts which mostly every species likes.
