bert the fert 28
I want to get our little lass a second hand scramble/dirt bike for Christmas, but i don't know what's best to go for. Is there a particular make that's reliable ? Do kids bikes have gears, or are they rev'n'go ? She's 12, but not very tall, do the bikes come in sizes, or age ranges ? Anyone got one to sell that they think might be suitable ? Ohh, and i don't have much budget, so how much am i likely to need ? Many thanks, Lainie.

Many thanks, Lainie. you will be able to get a 110cc pit bike for about £150 £200 3 gears usually are reliable if cleaned regularly or a py/pw 80cc 3 gears about £300 very reliable and quick i've had both types for my kids and i would definatly recomend the py/pw out of the 2 these are very good beginer bikes if she hasnt had one before and my 6yr old can ride not a problem so if she is not a tall lass this would be a very good bike hope this helps john

terrierjohn 49
there is a couple on here, a YZ and a KX80 about £300. Look in the motor section back a few pages. i would not go for a kx if its a first bike they are extremely fast and powerfull for a small bike not a good beginer one the response from the throttle to the back wheel is very quick and if pulled back to far taking off it will flip the lass right off it and maybe put her off bikes plus the yz kx cr etc are all clutch bikes the py/pw are semi automatic(no clutch) 3 gears up rev and go best option of a first bike imo Edited December 1, 2010 by terrierjohn

That sounds bad It's currently glorious sunshine here, but looking across the fell, there's a huge ominous looking front blowing in. I think i'd best get gone for the shopping while i can. She'll be 13 at Christmas, so even though she's not as tall as some of her classmates, i'm thinking she'll still need the bigger one, no ? P.S. gotta go out now, but will check thread as soon as i get home. Thanks for all the responses, you've all been really helpful.
terrierjohn 49
a gas gas is a trials bike built for tackling obstacle courses etc again not an ideal beginer bike and are high maintenence and quite expensive a kx will probably suit her better size wise but very powerfull small bike i have a pw80 with a 110cc engine that i put in it i will take a pic and upload later and i will get a pic of my buddies kx80 for you aswell the pw is a perfect height for my ten yr old but he is rather big for ten but i'm 6ft tall and i can ride it without my knees hitting my chin lol
Caravan Monster 323
I'd suggest looking at trials bikes, especially if you have a trials club nearby. They may well be able to help you find a suitable bike. Trials is a very unintimidating and friendly form of competition. Most clubs positively encourage kids to have a go. Just buying a dirtbike and riding in circles around a field is a bit of a dead end and gets boring quickly. Most of the top riders in off road competition started off in trials. Accidents are normally low speed, unlike motocross, where kids that don't yet fear pain can take tremendous risks with inevitable consequences. Don't forget the other costs - parts, oils, fuel and tyres. Also protective clothing - absolute minimum of boots and helmet for any type of riding. And of course, having somewhere to ride, unless you own your own land. Also, any bike that costs a couple of hundred quid will have been horribly abused, most likely not very safe and probably won't work very well, or for very long. Sorry, don't suppose that's what you wanted to hear...
terrierjohn 49
not nesissary cm you will pick up bikes in very good cond for £250-£300 one where they were bought brand new and the rider couldnt ride it or they have come off it and parents got scared to let them back on it this was the case with the one i have for my kids i bought it for £40 because the lads mum wanted it gone asap i offered more but she wouldnt have any of it and all it had was a sratch on the plastics other than half a dozen scratches the rest of the bike was brand new some bikes have been well looked after and have been for many years and the rider has outgrown it you just have to look at the bikes and give them a wee test run and decide which one has been best looked after and better value for the money paid
bert the fert 28
Thanks for those two posts, John and CM. A trials club does sound like fun, although she's a fairly shy kid around strangers so i'm not sure she'd go tbh, but i totally get what you're saying about riding round front field getting boring. I'll talk to her about paying a visit to a club for a nosey and see what she thinks. Mind you, i'm stuck with my crap budget.....so ultimately, it's gonna come down to whats affordable and the pw/py seem just about within reach. P.S. forgot to add, Grandma is coughing up for the helmet/boots, and i've seen a second hand leather jacket with armour on ebay that will fit her. We'll make sure she's as safe as is possible
