welshboy454 3
It doesnt help when my parents take them out and let them free hunt and run off well out of range. Infact it does my bloody head in! Appreciate advice Ask them to use a lead or not let the pup go more than 20 metres away from them. My brothers inlaws let his dog free hunt on walks with them and it is now useless- no control whatsoever. Quote Link to post

Fortunate son 0
if she doesnt drop it plays with it and doesnt come back but still holds it ,its related to dominance "my toy" get ur self a washing lead attach it to ur lead. throw a ball or dummy let the dog for it. when the dogs picks it as she starts to come back time recall and call her to u, slowly pulling the lead into u till she at your feet. do not attempt to take it off her straight away tell her dead or leave it remove it from her mouth then praise to reinforce correct behaviour of coming back and letting go.ALLWAYS TIME YOUR WHISTLE OR HERE command as the dog turns pulling the long lead back to u all the time.DO NOT PULL THE DOG TOO HARD JUST LET HER KNOW YOUR IN COMMAND,After a week have the long lead on throw the dummy let the dog run out as she turns if she pisses about stand on the lead and pull her back. She will soon get the idea ,If all goes well u can the use a small lead wrapped round her neck,Recall return will improve. No beating no hunting . mick20 23
Hi Bigthug87, you say that you have done very little with her, have you sorted the basics: sit/stay and recall? These need to be done before moving on to retrieve. Just my view. ATB with her. Mick Quote Link to post

I am working on them alot at the moment, to be honest I think you have hit the nail on the head and dont see how I didnt realise it before. She will sit/stay and recall but not reliably and on recall will come back but soon as shes near me turns round n starts going back to what she was doing. I have been doing alot of pulling her into me when calling the stop whistle after being ignored and she seems to be getting better. Also on the stay I get abouyt 4-5 yards away and shes itching to move off the spot! I am working on these before moving on to further stuff, dont see how I didnt realise thos sooner! What a fool I am lol Hopefully get it sorted Quote Link to post
doddsy1970 9
Hi Bigthug87, you say that you have done very little with her, have you sorted the basics: sit/stay and recall? These need to be done before moving on to retrieve. Just my view. ATB with her. Mick I agree with Mick.... I was thinking to myself why have you left it so long to do anything with her? To be honest at 8 months they should be loving retrieving, although they may not be perfect at it they should be coming back and delivering a dummy to you (but not cold or warm game). In my opinion you have actually made things harder for yourself.Firstly you need to establish that you are in control. Do this by making her sit when told, walk to heel when on the lead end to come back when called. As for retrieving start in an area where she cant get past you and throw a sock, ball or dummy no more than 4-5ft away and go over the top with the encouragement for her to bring it to you..... You may find that getting on your knees to her level will help you here. When she retrieves it, again go over the top with the praise. After she has retrieved 3 or 4 stop.... You want to keep her keen. If you do that for a few days you can then lengthen the distance, start to stand and try in a wider area..... If it dosent work you go back to the start until she the idea of what she needs to do....... That is just the way i would do it... I hope it helps. Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
The reason I havent done alot with her is she was a very timid puppy, she cowered alot and when you went to touch her she would wet herself the poor girl. Thankfully with a bit of love and care she no longer does this but it still quite nervous. This is one of the main reason I havent done anything, also shes still very puppyish so I didnt want to be telling her off for things she wouldnt understand. Shes come along way since I first got her, working on the sit/stay, the recall is 50/50 and I think I over looked these a bit. Will be cracking on with the basics and hopefully see the results, shes already getting better Quote Link to post

I had a shy spaniel (a dog) and i got him over it by taking him out to meet lots of people in lots of places. Alot of spaniel pee themselves, its just what they do. Good luck with the training i hope it all goes well. Quote Link to post

Good luck with the training i hope it all goes well. I got her at 10 weeks old. Someone else had her but his other dog kept snapping at her so she was very nervous. I have socialised her with dogs I know (mates spaniels and such) and she is much better, She used to run away if another dog came near her. Now she will approach them to say hello but shes still a lil nervous, especially bigger dogs, for some reason her and my lab hit it off the second I got her home. Although I have known dogs that will attack anything that moves but when my lab goes near them she somehow convinces them to play lol! She no longer wets herself out of nerves but might do out of excitement but hardly ever now. With the sit and stay she tries creeping forwards and I keep putting her back to where she was. Hoping she'll take the hint cos she keeps trying to move lol ! Quote Link to post

Lloyd90 509
Yes I have open palm to her and tell her to stay, she tries to creep forwards and I put her back on the exact spot. Shes very timid so I do it calmly and give her a fuss and a stroke when she stays put Quote Link to post
Lloyd90 509
I took her out this mornin and she was hunting lovely. Been working on the recall whistle and stop whistle. The recall is coming on leaps and bounds, she coming in 4/5 times where as before she would 50/50 and she wouldnt come in properly. The sit and stay isnt going well, she is constantly squirming and itching to move, I stopped after a few tries as she tucked her tail between her legs and was getting nervous, She hunted well and with me turning her and calling her back in she stayed in range 90% of the time so I am very pleased Quote Link to post

This might reassure her that you are not going away and as such make her a bit steadier. Quote Link to post

Thats what Im doing mate, I still can barely get more than 4-5 feet away and she wants to move Quote Link to post
