NEWKID 27,527
At 7am yesterday I was out of the door, in the car with the dogs, to meet my mate (bullseye71) for a mornings ferreting, the in car themometer read -7 to be honest I was questioning my sanity and whether 2 pairs of long johns would be enough, but cold weather wasn't enough of a deterent and by 8am as we walked across the fields the sun was coming up and it was great to be out. Bullseye71 had his pack of terriers and I had my Jack Russel 'Bella' and Lurcher pup 'martha' , 3 ferrets,a bag of purse nets and 2 long nets anything that bolted would be ours!!!!!!( or not) the dogs ran on and marked well at the middle of a long hedge, I was really pleased with my jrt she's started to mark well now and the lurcher pup (3/4 whip 1/4 beddy and nearly 6 mnths) followed the lead and stuck her nose in a hole and stayed tight . we decided to run the long nets either side and put bullseyes polecat jill 'coco' in ,within 5 mins there was the distinct rumbling of a rabbit underground Bella was bristling with exitment ,she knew what was coming , it bolted right in front of me but done a sharp right and headed back towards the hedge Bella was right on it forcing it along the top of the hedge and down the over side into the net, good start. We had another 3 in quick succesion 1 hit the net and bounced out before Bullseyes patterdale Doyle made sure it wasn't getting back to the hedge. It went quiet and Coco had seemed to lose a bit of interest, we picked up and walked down over the field to a hedge which bullseye had seen a load go into whilst lamping befpre the big freeze!!!! it was a long hedge with a load of holes and a lot of fresh runs through the still frozen long grass the dogs confirmed there were rabbits at home so we set the long nets again collared up a big hob ferret called 'del boy' along with the trusty coco and waited for the action to begin again a rabbit bolted, headed right along the top of the hedge and back in, we were heading that way "we'll get him later". Then i saw a rabbit hit the net about 50 yards away i ran as best as i could to get there (fleeced wellies too many pairs of trousers and general unfitness doesn't help) the inevitable cry of "run forrest run" went up and the obvious happened when i got there the rabbit slipped the net and my despairing grab wasn't good enough to stop it getting back to the hedge and relative safety. Queue severe p*ss taking and me being called forrest gump for the rest of the day It went down hill from there really, del boy had laid up so we sent in aother hob 'flash' to move him ( it would be a hard dig that no-one fancied) . Eventually Del Boy was out covered in rabbit fur we put him away and carried on with the other 2. We managed another 1 but the rabbits were not bolting well( too much noise from the p*ss takers!!!!!) this was heading for more rabbits killed below ground and hard digging in an extremely thick hedge. We decided to pick up the nets grab the ferrets and make a move, it was nice to hear the girly noise bullseye made cause his hands got so cold when he was pulling the long net back into the basket as it was covered in ice, I thought he was meant to be hard lol All in All it was a great day we could've had a few more but it's not always about numbers it was nice to see the dogs working so well the pups rock steady with the ferrets now and bellas getting better each time out. Thanks to Bullseye for a great day Quote Link to post
