cunninghamb 2
Ayeaye matey. I'm doing the game keeping coarse the now at Thurso. You can do four years with the college, 2 years as a skillseeker (basically you work and live on the estate and go to college for one week four times a year) Then you can go on and do your NC which is a year long coarse, where you got up to the college once a week, 8 times a year (I think, don't hold me to it! and there is a bit more class work involved for your degree). Then you can do your HNC where you go to college 2 weeks a month every 2 months I think, from what the other lads were saying. I'm doing my first of four years, I'm on a deer estate, but you can choose if you want to do upland keepering (deer or grouse) or lowland (pheasent & partridge). Hope this clears things up for you ... As for wages it depends on your estate but on average its about £125 a week, it's not a salary its to help with living expense's, apparently lol. Has been said that the locals in Thurso aren't to keen on keepers aswell lol. All The Best Quote Link to post
ferret_boy 0
I was on that course a few years back its was great. didn't finish the course though (regret it now) had a bit of a falling out with the head keeper was thinking of reapplying. but that second interview is murder you sit in a room and all the head keepers are all sitting at a big conference table and they fire questions I nearly sh#t a brick and thurso's a shit hot place LOL Edited December 25, 2010 by ferret_boy Quote Link to post
t5avs1 2
thanks for that info much appreciate it i rang the college and spoke to one of the course managers and he said it is mainly upland keepering they consentrate on,but they said if i could find an estate which cater for what i want to do then i could do that, and they said another college which do more pheasant might be the answer, its just the fact that i like the way the course is set by being mainly on a estate on once in a while a college, also the upland bit puts me off as they use ponies to extract the deer and i am a little bit allergic to them unfortunately Quote Link to post
ratattack 111
Not that many use garrons exclusively these days, the estate i was on used argo cats and quads. Try and get a placement interview and state you would like to learn about pheasants, theres plenty that do pheasants. Guys come from estates all over scotland, it's not all upland estates. Try anti histamines for the horse allergies Quote Link to post
