Guest bullterrier
To be fair its faf all to do wit the dogs drive agression or any other bullcrap .... Its all in the muscle located in said animals jaw and how they apply it for instanse i recently watched a test done on a bull terrier a am bulldog a mastiff and a rotty the rotty had more power measured in lb per square inch anyone on here will happily boast about the power and drive in the bullterrier so surely it should have won hands down but it was third after the ab to .i would also say that a jrt had more drive and agression than the averege dogue debor or mastiff although i doubt very much of you would choose the larger dogs bite simply because the terrier had more drive and attitude when it would be clear if the intention to hole you was the plan of eather larger breed it would be no easy task to remove the dog. Most people think pitbulls can lock there jaws but its the power and fitness in the jaw muscle along with every other muscle in there body that makes this old wives tail almost believable to the averege joe. What a complete pile of nonsense !!...if you want to call me a c**t then thats cool but if you pay no attention to anything else pay attention to this...A DOG BITES HARD BECAUSE HE WANTS TO !....simple. A pit bull does not bite hard because he has powerful jaw muscles, ive seen dogs of this breed with poor head, poor neck and poor dentition that could bite like a croc....ive also seen dogs with big powerful strong head/jaw structure that couldnt break a crisp packet ! The fact a pitbull is outpowered by a rottweiler 3 times its size and weight proves what exactly ? As an old man once told me " better to keep your mouth closed and have it look like you know nothing, than to open your mouth and prove it " In answer to the question,no...locking jaws is a myth made up by idiots who never took the time to learn ! :notworthy: wise words there mate. ..john

terrierjohn 49
no they dont have a lock jaw the term lock jaw is just an expression used for dogs with a strong bite that is not as easy to be released as less tenacious breeds and its an expression that has carried on through the years and alot of missguided folk think the term lock jaw is an actual thing that happens when certain breeds bite i've heard it quite alot from staffy owners over the years i must add these owners were not the most responsible owners as all they ever went on about is how good a lock jaw thier dog had never spoke of any other attributes of the dog just the way it hung from ropes and branches
steve123 29
where do people hear such rubbish, i too have been asked if my dog has a lock jaw , its the most ridiculous thing you keep hearing, will some one be honest and say they thought it was true and say where they get their information. its stubbornness tenacity and instinct that makes a dog hold on and not let go. some people use a stick as a lever to open the mouth of a dog when its not letting go of whatever its holding and wont listen to a comand but that doesnt mean its locked it is just too strong to open with your hands and maybe you wouldnt want to put your hands near the mouth of a prey exceited dog. cheers
RicW 67
I've read that Rottweilers have the strongest mercator muscles of any dog. They are the muscles that power tha bite. In a Rotty they can exert 130 lbs pressure each side. So if a Rotty clamps down and you try to force its jaws open you are trying to move 260lbs - 2 1/2 cwt. May not be "locked" but it feels like it! DeanD 3
I've read that Rottweilers have the strongest mercator muscles of any dog. You don't suppose whomever told you that might have been full of it do ya? I've read that wolves have or had enough jaw strength to shear the top of dogs head off too, you can read it for yourself in a book entitled Of Wolves And Men. Its a damn fine read too imo... but I have to wonder if everything said in it is 100% correct.

DeanD 3
book by a fella called lopez? could well be true-mother nature has been culling hard since year zero-only the strong survive Without looking, I believe so, it sounds familiar. Its basically notes or stories of hunting and trapping wolves by government paid hunters in the USA. Its very interesting, suprising even how smart certain wolves were and how other animals (a red fox being one) teamed up with or helped one wolf. Its a good read if someone likes reading hunting stories from the past.
