A Jamaican mum who stole a woman's identity to illegally stay in the country and obtain £41,000 in benefits has walked free from court with a suspended jail sentence.

Grace Mary Walford "lived a lie" for several years, using forged documents bearing the wrong name and date of birth.

She even used them to obtain work as a nursing auxiliary at Leicester's General Hospital.

Walford, of Charnwood Drive, Melton Mowbray, first came to England on a six-month visa in 2001 and purchased forged identity documents, including a driving licence and birth certificate, for £1,000.

They were in the name of a young woman who had recently applied for a photo driving licence, but never received it.

She had no idea someone had stolen her identity and would be claiming benefits using her name and date of birth.

Walford went home to Jamaica and then returned to England in 2002 using a false passport in the stolen name, bringing her children with her.

She had three children of her own and an adopted child and has since given birth to a son, now aged two, in this country.

Yesterday, Walford was given an 18-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

She pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to fraudulently obtaining tax credits and child benefit totalling £40,998 between March 2003 and September 2006.

She also admitted using a false passport and dishonestly obtaining employment with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust by purporting to be someone else.

Two other offences, possession of a forged birth certificate and forged driving licence - found when police searched her home - were taken into consideration.

Daniel White, prosecuting, said Walford, who has no previous convictions, made full admissions when she was arrested last September.

Passing sentence, Judge Christopher Plunkett said: "You embarked on a scheme to bring your family to this country to improve yourself and the prospects of your children.

"You weren't able to do so lawfully, so instead, you set about acquiring identification which wasn't your own. You've lived a lie for some years and, in the process, obtained £41,000 in benefits.

"I'm told the immigration authorities are awaiting the outcome of this hearing before determining what should be done with you.

"I'm not asked to recommend your deportation.

"You brought three children to this country and have had a further child, who has a right to live in this country.

"Whether you remain in this country is a matter for the Home Office."

He said he was suspending the sentence because of exceptional circumstances, including several young children being dependent upon her. Her children are aged 20, 17, nine and two. Her adopted daughter is five.

Steven Newcombe, defending, said Walford told interviewers she came to England to find work and give her children a decent education.

He said: "She's an exceptionally hard-working woman, working long hours and bringing up children who are now role models.

"She's been a great benefit to this country and has made every effort to give her children the best start in life."
