Lab 10,979
why do the police/military/border control all use spaniels for explo/money/drugs dogs when any old mongrel would do?? could it be cause spaniels are better than bitzas. Having owned spaniels and lurchers all my working life and round fathers before that, for work every day I take the spaniels and leave the lurchers in kennels why would that be cause no lurcher can ever do what I ask of my spaniels simple as really any one that thinks a lurcher could match them is frankly deluded. . All the services you mention above use collies also as do the likes of mountain rescue, the last time I looked the majority of dogs being used (Scotland) were collies. You won't get any arguements from me regarding a well bred gundogs capabilities, I'm only saying what I have experienced and I'll also concede the point that the majority (not all) of the lurchers I've seen the equivilant and better than a lot of gundogs have been collie blooded. i'll sit on the fence here and try and be everyones mate and say that many times over the years I've had a notion to own and work a gundog bred lurcher, nearly happened a few times but it didn't get off the ground. Might happen yet. Feck I'll end up falling out with myself. not sure a spaniel would work but If you could find a racy looking lab might make for an interesting cross 1st x might throw a bit heavy wonder if any one on here runs one? Line up the greyhound bitches and lets find out................ nice looking dog shame about the mess behind him though :whistling:  ........Your right though. They say the polish are grafters tae??? Not if you dont crack the whip............... Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I think where it falls down is that so few have seen decent gun dogs at work. 1 Quote Link to post

mackay 3,400
Just out of interest are cross breeds allowed to compete in gundog trials ??. No. I thought that was the case, pretty much eliminates the chances of a lurcher or any cross for that matter besting a purpose bred gundog. Quote Link to post

A mate of mine bred a litter of springer/greyhounds about twenty years back, they weren't a great shape and although some where handy dogs none were anything outstanding. I was thinking more along the lines of a racy lab or a golden from good working lines, I had a well bred handy golden dog I considered putting to a greyhound a few years back but the thought of finding homes for surplus pups put me off the idea. No. I thought that was the case, pretty much eliminates the chances of a lurcher or any cross for that matter besting a purpose bred gundog. Now this I defenetly agree with! I heard that the KC used to let crosses run but that one dog (a cross) won everything and that pissed off all the pure breed handlers! Quote Link to post
hily 379
bored with mines bigger than yours .My answer to the post is this As i like shooting over a dog that hunts close and stops when flushes game for me to have a shot at then if i manage to shoot it the dog retrieves to hand.this for me is the basics for an all round GUNdog .I keep e.s.s.to shoot over and a x terrier to work with the ferrets .The point is depends what you want the dog to do and what sport you want to follow as a begginer if you try and incorperate to many things into your training you will end up with a dog that does'nt do owt well.
