The Duncan 802
What i should have said my big dog can catch rabbits for fun, but a burl into a hare, straight line Roe and kill foxes with one shake. But then both of us would have been talking shite.... No, that would just be the one Lab I'll have to watch what i write here buddy but i can assure you some of the comments i have made are true and some are made up...... Although i'm having a bit banter with Paul he knows as much as me that his Lurcher cant perform like a proper working gundog. I dont dispute it can pick a few birds, so can pretty much any breed of dog thats been trained to do so........ im just to tight to buy a proper gundog have you seen the price of labs, with my eyesight i can hardly tell the difference anyway Aye but you dont want one of these ones with a big long f*****g name...... You want a real working dog................ Not with his spelling At the end of the day, its horses for courses, Pauls dogs can do everything he wants them to do , and they do it well, better than a lot of specialised retrievers. I suspect a lab or spaniel would not cover all the bases that Pauls dogs do. Atb Duncan pauls lurchers are the exception though and he is clearly talented when it comes to training them maybe one day some one will field a lurcher at a trial and prove us all wrong but till that day lads with lurchers can keep on dreaming that their dogs can perform as well a a proper gundog That is a day I would love to see I'm looking to, and started to train my own lurcher pup for all-round fieldsports use. To be fair though, I'm not looking for her to be stood by a peg as that doesn't float my boat. Signs are looking promising so far, but then I am investing a lot of time in her. atb Duncan PS it would be interesting to see if one of these professional gundog trainers could raise a lurcher pup to do as well as a more orthodox retriever Quote Link to post

bird 9,858
i would say regards gundogs (labs,springers,......) there are what it says (gundogs) the best at that job. But there are few lurchers out there that can work to the gun and work+ cover and very good at it. My 1x collie grey Bryn is brill working cover, he will get (in) any cover to get quarry, if its got a pulse he will find+ get it for a 25 in dog he is very agile and gets low to the ground just like a springer does, ive been beating lots of times and seen gun dogs working so i know what i am on about .. Many time he as marked birds + rabbits in cover, when ive been out with my 12g, and the great thing if you you miss with a shot when knocked out by him, he will catch it, not many labs or springers could do that, not that he is over fast, but hell of lot faster than any gundog breed . WILF 46,537
lurcher will do what a spaniel and a lab can do plus a whole lot more  i kid you not mine will work cover like a spaniel, retieve like a lab and catch stuff both the spaniel and the lab wouldnt get close to You wouldn't want a lurchers on the foreshore in Nov, Dec or Jan though would you mate.....they would freeze to death. Your mutts are good at there specific job and ours are good at ours....... 1 Quote Link to post

Millet 4,497
For what it's worth...the only thing i think a purpose bred gun dog of any type has over a lurcher is it's nose..yes they have better noses but purpose bred gun dog's are of little use for anything else other than working to the gun of some sort. On the other hand a lurcher especialy one with a good lump of collie blood in it can do a hell of a lot more and a one with a good coat will take just as much bad weather as any other dog.. You can go shooting/bushing/lamping/ratting/ferreting the list is endless for what you can do with a good lurcher..but i have found purpose bred gun dog's limmited to there abilities.. Lab 10,979
So we can say 100% that the Lurcher is a jack of all trades but master of none and the Lab or Spaniel is master at its job.......I'm happy with my master then i wouldn't be seen dead with anything but the best.....
