stroller 341
Ive seen some gundogs try to be lurchers usually to the cry of "you b*****d just shoot the f*****g thing" i did have a lurcher that could work with the gun but i was a young man with loads of time to train it, but to be honest he wouldnt work thick bramble and he tended to get out of range easily but retrieving from water no probs. but when it comes down to it he wasnt a lab or spaniel just a very well trained lurcher. A good gundog is hard to beat Quote Link to post

A good gundog is hard to beat ive got 2 here 25 and 26tts who will work with the gun no problem, the thickest cover is no problem, and i wont let them range infact they seem to know the difference between normal and gun work. they both retrieve shot and live game and in water aswell. ftm 3,357
well paulus you seem to have the best of both worlds with them 2 dogs but imo a gun dog is a gun dog and a lurcher is a lurcher love to see both excel but in their own field of work Quote Link to post
paulus 26
well paulus you seem to have the best of both worlds with them 2 dogs but imo a gun dog is a gun dog and a lurcher is a lurcher love to see both excel but in their own field of work the field of work is totally dependant on what you do with them, theres no reason why any dog with the correct attributes shouldnt be able with training, make a handy shooting companion. ive seen terriers do it. ok mine are not up to the standard of some breed specific gundogs that pickup or beat all season on a shoot but they are able to do everything that i require in a gundog to do,work cover, flush and retrieve shot game, from driven game to pigeon shooting from a hide to a bit of duck shooting and roost shooting to a general mooch with the shotgun or rifle all to an average standard. they also work furr and feather daytime and are fine on the lamp. theres nothing special about the breed just time spent out with them doing them. 1 Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
In my opinion you get more work from a spaniel, but have to put a bit more into them. Labs are pure gay pegdogs lol very rare to see one as good as a standard spaniel. Quote Link to post
barraboy 28
depends on what you want it for, i take my lab onto the marsh and my cocker rough shooting. my mate has a springer he uses on the marsh, she's great retrieves just as well as the lab. but after the first swim is a touch shivery [even with the neoprene coat] the lab he just soaks it up, ice in Dec, might as well be June. exceptions to every rule, i have a friend with a lab that smashes cover she's great but of the dozen or so labs she's the only one who does. most dogs can be trained to do most tasks but some are just equipped better, physically, for certain roles. but no hard rules whatever you're happy with. 3 Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
lurcher will do what a spaniel and a lab can do plus a whole lot more  i kid you not mine will work cover like a spaniel, retieve like a lab and catch stuff both the spaniel and the lab wouldnt get close to The last lad as made that claim bottled it when it come time to prove it lol   ive proved it on more than one occasion check history   I've seen Paul's dog work cover and retrieve from deep cover and seek n despatch, so I can attest he is not talking shite. The Duncan 802
What i should have said my big dog can catch rabbits for fun, but a burl into a hare, straight line Roe and kill foxes with one shake. But then both of us would have been talking shite.... No, that would just be the one Lab Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,169
and get into cover just as well as any spaniel As much as I'd love to agree with you, but, no they don't. Quote Link to post

But then both of us would have been talking shite.... No, that would just be the one Lab I'll have to watch what i write here buddy but i can assure you some of the comments i have made are true and some are made up...... Although i'm having a bit banter with Paul he knows as much as me that his Lurcher cant perform like a proper working gundog. I dont dispute it can pick a few birds, so can pretty much any breed of dog thats been trained to do so........ 1 Quote Link to post

Not with his spelling At the end of the day, its horses for courses, Pauls dogs can do everything he wants them to do , and they do it well, better than a lot of specialised retrievers. I suspect a lab or spaniel would not cover all the bases that Pauls dogs do. Atb Duncan Quote Link to post

Atb Duncan pauls lurchers are the exception though and he is clearly talented when it comes to training them maybe one day some one will field a lurcher at a trial and prove us all wrong but till that day lads with lurchers can keep on dreaming that their dogs can perform as well a a proper gundog 2 Quote Link to post
