it's not the size of the dog in the fight . it's the size of the fight in the dog .it's ether got it or at ain't

That was a saying about terriers not longdogs and even with terriers its not really true. Some quarry, cannot be taken by small dogs, period. It doesn't matter how much fight they have, there is no substitute for size, weight and strength.

I like a dog with brains but they won't help your dog much in some situations ;)

I have owned 24, 25 ,and for a short time a 27 inch dog, i now own a 22 and a half inch 65 pound bull cross who i think is doing well , with the potential of being a better dog in my eyes for what I require than any of the bigger dogs i have owned, lamping bunnies , terrier work and general mouching .

22"and 65lb :icon_eek: I take it its very racy then :tongue2:

racy enough to kill a hare last week on a fox drive with ten guns and a photo as a witness.

Dont take it personally roxy it was a joke  ....you keep killing hares with your 22" 65lb dog

I didnt mean to sound affensive if i did, or mean to show of as it looks like . As for keep killing hares it was an accidental kill and proberly will not be repeated  the dog actually is nearer to 23 than 22 if it makes a difference and 62 pound very fit, just weighed her

people who are saying there dogs do everything they ask of them and are 20 inches do not have all rounders!! i'm n9ot knocking there dogs as they have the dogs for what they do and there probably the best at the type of hunting they do but they are not capable of any quarry any where!!!

Link to post

surely there are dogs that will take a small percentage of any type of any quarry anywhere...but the miss rate would be much higher as they would be too general and not great at any one thing.....

not that i knew the dog or know the man but from the reading i have done Jon darcys Scooby was damn close!! this is speculation to explain myself but maybe he wasn't the best at fox or something but may take the odd one, could take daytime hare and i think he had a fair few species of deer and his catch ratio sounded high....there must be more dogs like this and that is an allrounder....

I say this knowing my dog is not yet and will probably never be an allrounder but he suits me and i'm happy with him!!

but to back up the size point he's a biggun!!

Sorry to jon darcy to use him and his dog as a reference and hope i have not said anything incorrect!!

The only things i know that dont get bothered are red and fallow stags every dog ive ever seen will strugle on these beasties and more than likely get smashed up if they tried singlehanded if it wasnt for the prison sentence nowadays i would have loved a play about with something really big 32 inch or above and a truck with a wynch to get em away

HI ALL

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO THE LADS THAT HAVE POSTED ON THIS TOPIC.

the feed back i got was very good and made good reading.

and i think the answer to the question what makes a good allround running dog small or big is whatever the man who is holding the lead is happy with

All the best Lee
