Cobra 0
Hi all i want to get another rifle for fox but also longer range rabbits. I already have a mauser.22 for general rabbiting but i would like to get something with more range and clout. The calibre's i have in mind are 223 and 17hmr now i am by no means an expert so any advice would be very much appreciated. I live in west yorkshire so how do i stand on the legal side of things using 17hmr on fox in this area. Many thanks Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Forget the .17hmr for fox, its a close range fox gun, and a last resort, i happen to own one, but its not a suitable calibre for consistant kills, and so for me a NO NO, i take it your not gonna eat the bunnies so for long range bashing and fox, i'd think about the .223, or the .204 or the ol hornet, if you have a gun dealer who stocks ammo for it. ATB. Snap. Quote Link to post
ToMMy_UK 0
Well i think the 22-250 is a brilliant fox calibre but.....in this case if you want to be plinking long range rabbits aswell as foxes i think the 223 is maybe a better choice. The .223 wont mess up the rabbits as much as the 22-250 would and it is cheaper ammo (and more bullet weight choice). I would stay away from saying you want a .17 hmr for foxes, its a brilliant round but not enough for foxes in the eye of the law. The police will much rather give you a centerfire for foxes to get the job done properly rather than a .17hmr which may leave them wounded. Quote Link to post
Cobra 0
Thanks for the advice fellas it looks like a 223 in on the cards then. I will start dropping hints with the wife you never know santa just might just be able to sort one out for me Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
Aye just go for a .243 bud nails the foxes good style and when you hit a rabbit with it ,it makes pretty patterns ! ATB Quote Link to post
Treacle Trackpad 6
I agree with Snap. Forget the HMR base on your criteria, and I would also forget the Hornet (you'll always wish you'd gone bigger). .223 would be my recommendation, I've just changed my .222 for a .223 and it's great for the long range bunnies (300 yds) and drops foxes no probs. DERBOY 18
have to be head shots other wise not worth eating ; Quote Link to post
GRAM71 29
What kind of ranges are we talking about here? 223 or any 22 c/f is way too much for a rabbit imo, expensive too if you shoot a lot of them. have you considered a 22WMR? it's an ideal small bore fox and rabbit round, superior to lr and hmr. Many thanks .223 too much gun for rabbits, .17 hmr not enough gun for longer range foxes .22 hornet good on rabbits to 250 yds and does fox out to 150 to 200yds very quiet when moderated, no noticable recoil, cheap and easy to reload LD Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Hornet Foxes to 200 yards Rabbits, head shot, to the same distance. Very underrated calibre. I leave the .243 in the cupboard unless, it begs for a walk. Quote Link to post
Treacle Trackpad 6
.223 too much gun for rabbits Cobblers it's a great rabbit round, as long as you don't want to eat them afterwards, but lets face it rabbits taste like crap anyway. Quote Link to post
