When is enough for a terrier to settle down infront of the fire and enjoy retirement.

My old bitch is 12 now and still thinks shes 3,shes first to the motor and will still do a good days graft.

i just havn't got the heart to leave her at home.

glad that you are gonna give your dog a good retirement mate as its the least they deserve when they give you everything.There was a guy on here whos lurchers were about 7 or somet and he was asking for a home for them to retire to now i aint gonna call him down as there his dogs but i be damn sure i give a dog away thats done all i ask

Is she holding you back on a days hunting with being the age she is? If not then let her crack on, if she is then you may have a hard decision to make. Not all dogs are meant for retirement, they just dont have it in em to sit at home by the fire while your out with the others. But even if she is struggling a bit to keep up the pace with you and the others, if you can be flexible for her then alls good. Your the only one whos able to make the decision and your the only one you have to answer to. atb BH

ive been round dogs all my life and when its time for a dog to call it aday they have always stayed with me till the end,i cant give them away or pass them on after being loyal for all those years.

and to be honest she dosent slow up the day its just me wanting to rest her [getting soft in me old age ]

she still comes in season even at this age ,it just shows how fit the old girl is.

ive had good dogs lurchers and terriers but theres always one thats a bit special and this scruffy old girl after all the battles shes had still gives me her best .

the day she dosent bounce about when i grab the spade will tell me shes had enough.

I had an old terrier bitch and she was working till she was 13 she got kidney failure and had to be pts she was still going out and went out the day before I took her to the vets she would not be left at home she was a bellter that was 3month ago now and the lakie bitch and plummer pup I have will not make half the dog's she was I dont think but I can hope.

My old man had qan old plummer bitch brilliant ratter and rabbiter and a great general mooching bitch, he didnt really have the heart to retire her she died in my dads hands when he was out beating one day at the good old age of 15.

The way we'd all want our dogs to go Penda(if not ourselves),out in the field doing whats best! .Like what folk have said she'll let you know when time comes to start slowing her down,that little longer she lies in for,maybe a little stiffness about her movement,all signs but if you know your dog your'll know when.I was out with a 13,14 year old collie x lurcher today and she marked and flushed as well as she ever did,she'll get a day off tomorrow for her own good but if her owner would let her she'd be up for another mooch out on the lamp tonight.

cracking looking dog mate, tbh my dogs have done its job till the day it doesnt want or it is getting hurt to much, 12 is a good age and she will let u kno when she dont want to do it. ATB
