woolbr8stl 0
Out all day saturday with friends and finally found something. Tyke did a good job, we thought he had a raccoon from the growling we heard while digging. We broke him off of what turned out to be a very nasty possum. Then my friend's 8 mo old dog pup had a look behind the shovel. Sure was funny after we left that spot, he was obsessed with the shovel. I guess he thinks possums come with it The young pup and again with his beloved shovel Happy New Year to everyone, Bettina Quote Link to post

woolbr8stl 0
Some possums give a fight, some "faint" and play dead (Playing Possum is the term here in the States) This possum was full of himself and there was quite some scrapulation going on while we dug. We opened to Tyke having a lock on the side of his head. The possum never fainted and continued to fight even after we broke Tyke off. We let him go for another day after checking his jaw was not broken, releasing some of our quarry when possible. Possums tend to be good quarry for new or young dogs. In this case he was too agitated to let the 8 mo old pup have a close look. That's why we used the shovel between them this time. It's not uncommon for a dog to enter on a possum, fight until it plays dead and then have the dog draw it out. They wake up after a few minutes and wander off. Many dogs will also leave it when the play dead, thinking they've killed it. Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
sounds like a really interesting quarry!!!! but i wonder when they play dead is it simialr to a fox... apparently a fox will go into a state of shock and then come round again a scamper off when danger is clear Quote Link to post
