Crow 1
Instead of buying an expensive slip lead why not make your own? By taking a decent piece of cord, creating two knots and adding in a tiny bit of 'savvy' you can knock one up in three minutes that not only works well, but is nice and cheap if you find yourself in the position that you have to 'lose' it quickly  Look at the picture below and have a go. Just get the lengths 'about right' and you're away. I say 'about right' because that's all it has to be. Don't forget to heat the ends of the cord to stop it fraying! Have a play and save yourself some cash Edited January 3, 2007 by Crow Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
use something similar, involves pulling the bit you hold through the loop at the end yours looks a bit handier cheers Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
i always use a bit of blue draw cord ...i.e. thin rope.. not as fancy as that tho.. Quote Link to post
Crow 1
JDF, when the dog is 'slipped' the free end will pull through the little loop so maybe it's not that much different from yours! Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
with mine your finger is creating another loop which can be a bit of a bugger if the dog twists it,i think i'm going to steal your idea Quote Link to post
Crow 1
thats a good slip mate i just leave the collar on the dog and have a cord runing through it ! Leaving your collar on a running dog - now that's another subject Quote Link to post

mistwalker 0
Cheers Crow, definitely gonna give this a try. I've been using a leather jobbie for a couple of years, but the leathers getting past it's best, so I've been looking for a replacement, this post came up just in time. Thanks. Quote Link to post
caterpiller 10
Be very carefull using a thin drawcord. My Dad made a slip lead out of something similar, somehow during the Nights Lamping in between Runs the cord had wrapped around his Finger. He flicked on the lamp and spotted a Rabbit well out, as he started to get a bit closer the Rabbit was up and Running. The Dog spotted the Rabbit so my Dad slipped him, as the Dog shot off he felt a sharp stinging pain in his Finger. The Dog missed the Rabbit and came back to hand then my Dad put the Lamp on his Finger as the pain was starting to kick in. When he put the Lamp on his Finger, it was GONE , there was only the Bone there, his Mate who was with him took one look at his missing Finger and passed out . He had to go back to the Farmhouse to get the Farmer to take him to Hospital as his Mate was unsafe to Drive as he kept on feeling faint . The Hospital cleaned him up and he returned the next morning to have the operation to remove the Bone. Quote Link to post

Have a play and save yourself some cash its what we used to call the poormans altcar slip not seen one in years we used to use the free version made out of bailer twine but they soon frey that cord looks the buisness ideal if you dont like a collar on the dog when running Quote Link to post
leec 132
i use the same but were the loop is in the middle slide a strong key ring through as the loop Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , IVE USED THAT TYPE OF SLIP LEAD FOR OVER 25 YRS ,................. BUT ..................... ONLY WHEN IVE BEEN CAUGHT SHORT OF A DECENT SLIP LEAD , IMO ..... THEY ARENT SOMETHING I WOULD USE AS THE NORM ..... RUNNING A DOG WITH A COLLAR ON ? ................... WELL IVE DONE IT AND WILL IN THE FUTURE FROM TIME TO TIME NO DOUBT TO BE HONEST ............. IVE RAN DOGS FOR NEARLY THIRTY YRS NOW AND HAVENT SEEN OR HEARD OF A SINGLE DOG GETTING INJURED BY HAVING A COLLAR ON , YET THE SAME STORIES STILL PERSIST .... NO DOUBT SOMEONE OUT THERE WILL HAVE HAD A DOG HURT THROUGH RUNNING IN A COLLAR .......... BUT THEN AGAIN YOU CANNOT WRAP THEM IN COTTON WOOL . MY PREFERED SLIP IS A LEATHER GREYHOUND COLLAR WITH AN INCH PURSENET RING ON EACH END ..... ONE RING HAS A LEATHER LEADER ATTACHED WITH WRIST LOOP ....... THE OTHER END HAS A THICKISH CORD OR THIN LEATHER STRAP ATTACHED ......... THE CORD GOES THROUGH THE OPPOSITE SIDES RING , EASY AS THAT !!! ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post
