PoCk0 40
I'm gonna get some truffle oil and put this useless terrier to some use Terriers are good at finding them too, I began training my patterdale but the lurcher turned out to be better so just concentrated on her. The best out of them all though is my black lab, she's got a brilliant nose and she obidient. You'll find truffles under oak, hazel, evergreen oak and beech trees where the soil has a high pH (between 7.5 and 8. So look out for chalky land!! Edited May 4, 2012 by PoCk0 Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
I have met a few people over the water who have truffle dogs, and a few here in the UK who go over to work there dogs. They use Lagotto Romagnolo and Spinone Italiano and various crosses of similar types. It can certainly be a lucrative game to be in, and at 50p a rabbit of the game dealer maybe it could be a good one to be in, but nowhere near as much fun as hunting quarry  Edited May 4, 2012 by Sirius Quote Link to post

And you get a good price if you get a good haul. Down south is usually the best place for truffles, espescially Wiltshire Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Can remember as a kid getting truffles out of leaf matter under beach trees not very big about the size of a walnut at biggest. Im right into shrooms and honestly didnt think there was any truffles worth eating in the uk. Till i saw on a progame last year a guy picking them above ground he had filled a basket in half an hour reckoned it was between 1500 and 2000 quids worth but they were in the south of the country didnt think think there was any edible sorts anywhere else. Be interesting to hear whos found what Quote Link to post

This will be my first year hunting them as i've got a dog thats up to the job now, but i've been interested in them for years. Honestly though, its definately worth trying especially if your into your mushrooms, they can be found in more places than you'd think. And its the Black Summer Truffle (Tuber aestivum) that is found in the UK Quote Link to post

Yeh, i'll definately try and get some footage and if you want to train your dog I can tell you the method I used, which seems to have worked. It took me a long time to come up with an easy way to train the dog without spending money on fresh truffles or spending hours trying to do it. I think i'm going out this weekend for the first time so fingers crossed i might find 1 or 2. Quote Link to post
