I have done a lot of lamping with my dog

in the past and have never gone

anywhere without permission,

but gave that up after having dogs stolen

took up fishing instead . but would like to have a go at shooting.

Hello there Ray and welcome to this side of the forum :gunsmilie:

If I were you, I'd approach the landowners who let you go lamping with the dogs, I'm pretty sure they would allow you to shoot on their land as you would be continuing to do them the favour of pest control  Worth a try? Deffinately

HOWEVER:

First thing is first:

Go find a club or range (as been said, everyone (well almost everyone) will be delighted to talk, show and let you shoot their pride and joy.

Secondly handling a few different guns will allow you to decide which powerplant you like best, Springer, PCP or Co2.

Thirdly, before you begin doing pest control with airguns; you'll need to put in the practice on paper and metal targets at various ranges until your marksmanship is up to scratch. Once you've got that under your belt, there will be no stopping you, it's both addictive (the hunt); adrenaline fueled and amazingly satisfying watching your quarry go knowing that you've done a good job without it suffering at all.

If there is a local gun shop to you, approach them and ask if there is a club local that they know of. Many will point you in the right direction

Unless you live in Hull  where if you ask; they turn around and walk away

Yeah we are a pretty friendly bunch

They have to drag me kicking and screaming into Hull, I detest the place. Sadly it's my local "Town"

Mind you I think I'd think that about every city

just a question i know its been asked

but if you was starting up would you go for a springer

or precharged, what would be best to use,

Ray

hi there mate and welcome, i see you have already some of the yocals.

theres in my eyes two sides to this question.

1. get the pcp no recoil to have to worrie about, hence a little easery to get used to and become compitent with.

or

2. if you want to be a true marksmen go with the springer. take a little more skill to shoot and get the hang off. ie hold of the rifle grip ect,if you can shoot well with a springer then a pcp will be a doddel.

my self spent many years with springers and never advanced to pcp untill i started working and could afford one.

but if your after pcp cant go wrong with air arms, i myself shoot a aas410, got it scope silencer bag bipod 12lt diving bottle mint con for £350.

Hiya Ray.

Just my thoughts mate.

I would probberbly go for a PCP straight away, nice to shoot, very accurate, and quiet too.

So many out there to choose from.

I think you said your budget was about £500 ish, The AA s200 and BSA Ultra would be a good starting point.

Both are very accurate and light, very pointable too.

Just my thouhts mate.

Good luck with your choices

hi buddy

you are more than welcome to visit me and i will take you out for the night/day and show you what it is really about i have to rifles air arms s410k .22 and the s400 .177 i don't mind letting you use either.

i started with springer's i had a hatsan mod60 was doing 11.4 out of the box brilliant springer knocks bunnies over at 30+yards no problems and its only £100 to buy.

no since then i have advance t PCP which i cant fault at all,

PCP good points

you can fit a bi-pod

no recoil

single or multi shot versions

silent

PCP bad points

charging gear

springer good points

reliable

no air needed

cheap (some)

bad points

cant fit a bi-pod

recoil

these are my views on the above, everyone had different views buddy

first before shooting live quarry get out and shoot paper targets or knockdown targets,

then your need to decided on scope, mill dots or cross hair then practice your ranges and different distance

as for permission some people will say don't dress in camo but both of mine and ste permission we have i was dressed in camo and shoot the permission the same minute he say yes

anyways buddy hope this helped you out and good luck with your choice
