lurcher lass 9
i understand your point but england is only helping ireland because they have money saved there themselves,, the only thing i can't understand is its all well and good england helping ireland due to being part of the eu but where's the line of eu countries helping england? JohnGalway 1,043
i understand your point but england is only helping ireland because they have money saved there themselves That's about the height of it. To try to put it in a philanthropic light isn't correct. Ireland is receiving loans, which will come with payable interest rates. Not gifts or hand outs. Ireland goes down, it puts the UK in a very tight spot, given the trading we do with each other and also banking relations. Besides, no ordinary person will benefit one whit from this, it's all being poured into the black hole that is 3-4 banks and one other twisted notion of a financial outfit. Some minister on from Turkey had a good phrase in relation to a different issue "If there's a fire in my neighbours house, of course I try to help to put it out, or, it spreads to my house too". Mind you, there are a few on here who'd happily burn down their own houses just to spite their neighbour Edited November 22, 2010 by JohnGalway

shepp 2,285
I am no left wing apologist, but if we owe anybody a bit of help it would be the Irish. Taking a look at relatively recent history, our rule there was nothing to be proud of. They cost us nothing after independence and have been a good neighbour and trading partner. As stated before it is a loan and even if things go tits up we could take the loss, let's face it we fritter away more on less deserved cases in Europe every year. PeakOil 352
The Irish political and financial elites shall reap what they sow as will the rest of the PIIGS in due course, anyhow Greece + Ireland + Portugal = Spain. A generation of subservience towards the Germans and ECB beckons, but quite why the Irish population appear happy to accept higher taxes and reduced public spending on top of interest payments to keep German bondholders happy is another story. The bandits keep looting and must be headed to Portugal next.
